Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is breathed through a small mask over the nose. It can help people feel more relaxed during dental treatment while staying awake and able to respond. Its effects usually begin within minutes and fade fairly quickly once the gas is stopped, which is one reason it is a common choice for mild to moderate anxiety.
If you are travelling from Boston and feel nervous about an upcoming procedure, ask our Port Dover office whether nitrous oxide might be appropriate. The dentist will review your health, the treatment planned and your preferences before recommending it, and explain how the visit would be planned around it.

How it feels
People commonly describe feeling relaxed, warm or slightly floaty, sometimes with tingling in the hands or feet. Time may seem to pass more quickly. You remain conscious, can hear the dentist and can answer questions. The level can be adjusted during the appointment if you feel too much or too little effect, so just let the team know.
Nitrous oxide does not numb the tooth, so local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that need it. It also does not put you to sleep or erase memories of the visit. For people with severe anxiety or complex treatment, other forms of sedation may be discussed instead of, or alongside, nitrous oxide for those visits.
Is it suitable
Tell the dentist about lung conditions, recent ear or sinus problems, pregnancy, vitamin B12 deficiency, mental health conditions and all medications you take. Nasal congestion can make it difficult to breathe the gas effectively. These details help the dentist decide whether nitrous oxide is a safe and practical option for you at this time and for this procedure.
Some people find the sensation unpleasant or feel nauseous. Others have conditions that make it unsuitable. If nitrous oxide is not right for you, the dentist can discuss other ways to manage anxiety, such as breaks, distraction or different sedation methods where appropriate. Trying it once does not commit you to using it again at future visits.
On the day
A light meal a couple of hours beforehand is often recommended, as an empty or very full stomach can increase the chance of nausea. Follow any specific instructions from the office. The mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe normally while the dentist gradually increases the gas until you feel relaxed but still aware.
Throughout the procedure, the team monitors how you are feeling and can adjust the level. Let them know if you feel uncomfortable, dizzy or nauseous. At the end, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas before you sit up and get ready to leave. Take your time standing up.
Afterward
Many people feel back to normal shortly after the gas is stopped. The dentist will check that you are alert before you leave. Ask whether you can drive yourself home or should arrange a ride, especially if you will be travelling back to Boston. Avoid making important decisions immediately afterward if you feel at all unsettled.
If nitrous oxide helped, mention it when booking future appointments so it can be planned again. Over time, some people find they need it less as their confidence in dental visits grows. Share your feedback about what worked and what did not, so the team can keep adjusting their approach to suit you at each visit.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention that you would like to talk about nitrous oxide for an upcoming appointment. The team can explain what information the dentist needs to assess whether it suits you.
Have a list of medications and health conditions ready, and ask whether you should arrange a ride home after the visit.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You stay awake and able to respond to the dentist. Most people simply feel more relaxed. If you need deeper sedation, the dentist can discuss whether other options might be appropriate for your situation.
The effects usually wear off quickly, and many people can drive after a short recovery. Follow the dentist’s advice for your situation, and arrange a ride if you feel at all unsteady or unsure about driving.
Nitrous oxide is widely used in dentistry and is considered safe for many patients when properly administered and monitored. The dentist will review your health history to decide whether it is suitable for you and your planned treatment.
Often, yes. Nitrous oxide helps you relax but does not numb the tooth. Local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that need it, though many people find the injection easier to cope with once they feel calmer.
Nitrous oxide is commonly used with children when appropriate. The dentist will assess the child’s health, age and the procedure, and explain what parents should expect before and after the appointment, including any eating instructions.
Sedation can help some patients cope with anxiety or longer procedures. Boston patients can ask our Port Dover team which options fit their health.
If your child dreads the dentist, our Port Dover team can help Boston parents plan slower, predictable visits and age-appropriate comfort options.
