Caring for St. Williams patients at our office in Port Dover
Every dental service for St. WilliamsProtection while you sleep
Grinding during sleep is often unconscious. A partner may hear it, or you may notice worn edges, chipped teeth, jaw tightness or headaches in the morning. A night guard is a thin appliance worn over the teeth at night to create a protective layer, reducing damage to enamel and dental work while the cause of grinding is considered.
St. Williams patients who suspect they grind can have their teeth checked at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look for signs of wear, ask about symptoms and explain whether a guard is likely to help and which type would suit your bite.

Do I grind?
Waking with sore jaw muscles, tension headaches, tender teeth or clicking in the jaw joint are common signs. Some people notice their teeth feel sensitive or their jaw is tired after sleep. A bed partner hearing grinding noises is often what prompts people to seek advice.
Flattened biting edges, small chips, cracked fillings and teeth that look shorter than before may point to grinding. The dentist may also see tooth surfaces worn shiny or notches near the gum line. Tracking these changes at checkups helps decide whether protection is needed.
Why a guard
A night guard absorbs grinding forces, protecting enamel from further wear and reducing the risk of chips and fractures. It can also protect crowns, veneers and implants. Some people notice less jaw discomfort, though results vary. The guard helps preserve teeth while other factors are addressed.
A guard does not usually stop grinding itself. Stress, sleep issues, certain medications and other factors may contribute. If you snore heavily or wake unrefreshed, the dentist may suggest a medical sleep assessment. A guard is one part of managing grinding, not always the complete solution.
Fitting process
The dentist examines your teeth and jaw and takes impressions or a digital scan. Your bite is recorded so the guard sits evenly. The guard is then made, usually in a laboratory, from a durable material. You will be told when to return for fitting.
At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks that the guard fits snugly and that your bite on it is balanced. Adjustments are made for comfort. You will learn how to insert, remove and clean the guard. Most people adjust to wearing it within a few nights.
Living with it
Rinse the guard after wearing it, clean it gently with a soft brush and let it air dry before storing it in its case. Avoid hot water and harsh cleaners. Keep it out of reach of pets. A clean guard is more comfortable to wear and less likely to harbour bacteria.
Bring the guard to your regular checkups so the dentist can check fit and wear. Replace it if it cracks, feels loose or no longer fits after dental work. Report jaw pain, bite changes or discomfort with the guard so it can be adjusted or reassessed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment for grinding. Mention jaw pain, headaches or worn teeth, so the team can plan for impressions if appropriate.
If you have an old or store-bought guard, bring it with you so the dentist can see how it fits and how it has worn.

Custom guards generally fit better and are more comfortable than store-bought versions. The dentist can explain whether a custom guard is advisable based on the wear and symptoms observed.
Not usually. It protects teeth from the effects of grinding. Addressing stress, sleep quality or other contributing factors may help reduce grinding itself.
Some people find jaw discomfort improves with a guard. If pain persists, the dentist may assess the jaw joint further and discuss other approaches.
It depends on how heavily you grind and the material. Guards may last a few years. Regular checkups help identify when a replacement is needed.
A short adjustment period is normal. If discomfort continues, the guard may need adjusting. Bring it to the office rather than altering it yourself.
A custom night guard is shaped to your teeth to cushion grinding forces while you sleep. Find out how St. Williams patients are fitted at our Port Dover office.
