Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseProtect teeth while you sleep
Because grinding usually happens during sleep, many people only learn about it when a partner mentions the sound or a dentist spots worn, flattened teeth. Over months and years, grinding can chip enamel, crack fillings and leave the jaw muscles stiff. A night guard is one of the most common ways to protect teeth from that damage.
Port Ryerse residents who suspect night grinding can have their teeth and jaw checked at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look for wear, ask about symptoms and help you decide whether a guard makes sense before any appliance is made.

Do you grind
Waking with a sore jaw, tight facial muscles, headaches around the temples or teeth that feel tender are common clues. Teeth may become sensitive to cold as enamel thins. Some people notice chips along front teeth or that their teeth look shorter or flatter than they used to.
A bed partner or family member may hear grinding or clicking at night. The dentist may see shiny wear facets, cracks, receding gums at the necks of teeth or enlarged chewing muscles. Combining your observations with the exam helps confirm whether grinding is occurring.
Is a guard right
A night guard is often recommended when grinding is causing visible wear, chipping, sensitivity or damage to restorations. It places a protective layer between teeth so the forces land on the appliance instead of enamel. Many people also report less jaw tension in the morning.
Snoring, gasping during sleep or daytime fatigue may suggest a sleep breathing problem that should be evaluated by a physician, as a standard guard is not a treatment for sleep apnea. Stress, caffeine and certain medications can contribute to grinding. The dentist may discuss these too.
Getting a guard
The dentist takes impressions or a scan of your teeth and may record your bite. The guard is then made, often from a durable acrylic or a layered material. Its thickness and design depend on how heavily you grind and the condition of your teeth and jaw.
At the fitting, the guard is checked for comfort, retention and an even bite. Adjustments are made as needed. You will receive instructions for wearing, cleaning and storing it. A follow-up may be arranged to check how you are adapting after a few weeks of use.
Living with it
Put the guard in each night as part of your bedtime routine, and keep the case near your toothbrush as a reminder. The first week may feel unusual. Most people adapt quickly. If you travel between homes, remember to pack the guard, since skipping nights allows wear to continue.
Bring the guard to checkups so wear patterns, cracks and fit can be reviewed. A guard with holes worn through should be replaced. Report jaw pain, a changed bite or discomfort. New dental work may also require adjusting the guard to keep it fitting correctly.
Planning your appointment
Book an exam at our Port Dover office and mention signs of grinding you have noticed. The dentist will assess wear and discuss whether a guard is appropriate.
If you snore heavily or wake unrefreshed, mention this too, as it may need a medical evaluation as well.

A guard protects teeth from grinding forces but does not necessarily stop the habit. Some people grind less with one in place. Managing stress and other factors may also help.
Some people use them short term, but they can be bulky, loose or uncomfortable and may not protect evenly. A dentist-made guard is fitted to your bite. Ask the dentist about the differences.
Rinse it after use, brush gently with a soft toothbrush and cool water, and let it dry before storing in its case. Avoid hot water, which can warp the material.
Yes, it can still cause wear, chips and cracks over time even without pain. The dentist can assess whether the level of wear justifies protection.
Stress is a common contributor, but grinding can also relate to sleep patterns, caffeine, alcohol, medications and bite factors. Often more than one cause is involved.
A custom night guard is made to your bite to protect teeth from grinding. Learn how Port Ryerse patients are fitted and how guards are maintained in Port Dover.
Waking with a tired jaw or flattened teeth may point to bruxism. Port Ryerse residents can explore causes, protection and follow-up at our Port Dover office.
