Grinding and clenching during sleep can exert far more force than normal chewing, and most people have no idea they do it. Over time, this can flatten and chip teeth, crack fillings, cause sensitivity and leave the jaw muscles tired and sore. A night guard creates a barrier between the upper and lower teeth to absorb much of that force.
For Langton patients who suspect they grind at night, an exam at our Port Dover office can confirm the signs and assess whether a night guard is the right step. The dentist will also look for related concerns, such as jaw joint problems or possible sleep-related breathing issues that may need separate attention.

Do you grind?
Waking with a sore jaw, tight facial muscles, headaches near the temples or teeth that feel tender when you first bite are common signs. A bed partner might hear grinding sounds during the night. Some people notice increased tooth sensitivity, especially to cold, or a feeling that their bite has changed slightly over months or years.
At a checkup, the dentist may see flattened or worn biting surfaces, small chips along tooth edges, cracks in enamel or fillings, and notches near the gumline. The muscles of the jaw may feel enlarged or tender. Photos or models can document the wear so the dentist can tell whether it is progressing between your visits.
How guards help
A night guard sits over the upper or lower teeth and takes the wear that would otherwise damage enamel, crowns, veneers and fillings. It does not necessarily stop grinding, but it reduces the damage that grinding causes. Many people find they replace a worn guard far more easily than repairing chipped or cracked teeth over the years.
Some people also notice less jaw pain and fewer morning headaches when wearing a guard, as it may help the muscles relax and distribute forces more evenly. Results vary. If jaw pain continues or worsens, the dentist will reassess and may suggest additional strategies or involve another healthcare provider to help manage your symptoms more effectively.
Fitting process
The dentist takes impressions or a digital scan of your teeth and may record how your jaws come together. These are used to make a guard that fits your teeth closely. The dentist will recommend whether an upper or lower guard is better and what material suits your grinding pattern, bite and any existing dental work.
At the fitting appointment, the guard is checked for fit, comfort and an even bite. Small adjustments are made to reduce pressure points. You will practise putting it in and taking it out. It may feel bulky for the first few nights. Call if it causes soreness, makes your jaw ache or feels loose after a week or two.
Living with a guard
Rinse and gently brush the guard each morning with cool water, then let it dry before storing it in its ventilated case. Avoid hot water, which can warp it. Keep it away from pets and direct sunlight. Do not use regular toothpaste on clear guards if it scratches them; ask the team which cleaning products are suitable.
Bring your guard to every dental checkup so the dentist can check its fit and look for worn areas or cracks. Guards eventually wear out and need replacing, especially for heavy grinders. If you have new dental work, the guard may need adjusting. Report new jaw pain, clicking or changes in your bite promptly to the team.
Planning your appointment
Book an exam at our Port Dover office and mention morning jaw soreness, headaches or tooth wear you have noticed. The dentist can assess the signs and explain whether a night guard is worth considering.
If a partner has heard you grinding, or you already own a guard, mention it or bring it to the appointment.

Many people learn from a partner or the dentist. Signs include jaw soreness on waking, headaches, worn or chipped teeth and sensitivity. An exam can confirm wear patterns that suggest grinding, even if you are not aware of it.
A night guard protects teeth and restorations from damage but may not stop the habit itself. Some people grind less with a guard, and many experience less jaw discomfort. Addressing stress and sleep factors may also help.
Over-the-counter guards are less expensive but often bulky and loose. They can be uncomfortable or fall out during sleep. A custom guard fits more closely and is designed around your bite. Ask the dentist which option suits you.
It depends on the material and how heavily you grind. Some guards last several years, while others wear through more quickly. Bring your guard to checkups so the dentist can monitor wear and recommend a replacement when needed.
Children often grind as their teeth change, and many outgrow it. Guards are not always recommended for growing mouths. Mention grinding at your child’s checkup so the dentist can monitor wear and advise on whether any protection is needed.
A custom night guard can cushion grinding and protect dental work while you sleep. Langton patients can learn how guards are made and maintained in Port Dover.
