Many people grind or clench during sleep without knowing it. Over months and years, the pressure can wear down enamel, chip edges, crack fillings and leave the jaw muscles tired by morning. A night guard does not cure grinding, but it places a protective layer between your teeth, absorbing much of the force before it reaches enamel and dental work.
If you live in Hagersville and suspect grinding, our Port Dover dentists can look for signs during an exam and talk through whether a night guard would be a helpful step for you, and what else might be contributing.

Spotting grinding
Waking with a sore or tight jaw, headaches near the temples, sensitive teeth, or a feeling that your teeth do not fit together quite right can all point to night-time grinding. You may notice flat or chipped edges in the mirror. Some people find their cheeks or tongue show ridges where they have been pressed against the teeth.
A partner or family member may hear grinding sounds during the night. Children sometimes grind audibly, which often worries parents. The dentist may notice wear patterns, cracked fillings or enlarged jaw muscles before you do. If you are unsure, an exam can show whether the pattern of wear is consistent with grinding.
Why it happens
Stress, anxiety, caffeine, alcohol, smoking and certain medications are associated with grinding. Bite irregularities and missing teeth may contribute in some people. The pattern often changes over time, being worse during stressful periods. Noticing when symptoms flare can help you and the dentist understand what might be influencing your grinding.
Night-time grinding is sometimes linked with sleep-disordered breathing, including sleep apnea. Loud snoring, waking gasping, daytime sleepiness or being told you stop breathing during sleep should be discussed with your physician. A night guard is not a treatment for sleep apnea and, in some cases, a different type of appliance may be considered.
Getting a guard
The dentist takes impressions or a digital scan of your teeth and records how your jaws meet. A guard is made from durable material, usually covering either the upper or lower teeth. The dentist will explain the design, its thickness and why it suits you. Ask how long it will take to be ready so you can plan your return visit.
When the guard is ready, the dentist checks the fit and adjusts the biting surface so your teeth touch evenly. You should be able to close comfortably. It may feel strange for a few nights, and some extra saliva is common. If it pinches, rocks or causes jaw discomfort, contact the office for an adjustment.
Using it well
Wear the guard every night, not just when you remember. Brush your teeth before putting it in. In the morning, rinse it and brush gently with cool water and a soft brush, then let it dry before placing it in its ventilated case. Keep it away from heat and curious pets, both common causes of damage.
Bring the guard to each checkup so the dentist can check for wear and fit. Holes, cracks or a loose feel are signs it needs repair or replacement. If dental work is done, such as a new crown, the guard may need adjusting. Continued jaw pain should be mentioned, as further assessment may be helpful.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an exam for suspected grinding. Mention jaw pain, headaches or broken teeth, and whether anyone has commented on snoring, so the dentist can plan an appropriate assessment.
If you already have a guard, even an over-the-counter one, bring it. The wear marks on it can show how and where you grind.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Possibly. Many people grind without pain but still wear down enamel or crack fillings. If the dentist sees signs of significant wear, a guard may help protect your teeth, even without discomfort.
Children often grind as teeth and jaws develop, and many grow out of it. Because their mouths change quickly, guards are not always recommended. The dentist will check for wear and advise whether monitoring or a guard makes sense.
No. A sports guard is designed to absorb impact during activity, while a night guard is designed to protect against grinding forces during sleep. They are made differently and are not interchangeable.
A properly made and adjusted guard should not change your bite. Poorly fitting guards can. If your bite feels different in the morning for more than a short time, contact the office so the guard can be checked.
That depends on how much you grind and the material used. Some guards last several years, while heavy grinders may need replacements sooner. The dentist will check it at each visit and let you know when it is time for a new one.
