Port Dover Family Dentistry
Playing sport and grinding at night involve different appliance needs. Our Delhi guide explains why a sports mouthguard cannot simply stand in for a grinding guard.

Welcoming Delhi patients at our office in Port Dover
All dental services for DelhiUnderstand the wear before choosing an appliance
You may have been told that you grind during sleep, noticed wear on your teeth or become aware of clenching while concentrating. These observations are useful starting points, but they do not tell you which appliance or other care is appropriate.
Delhi patients can discuss grinding concerns at our Port Dover practice. Bring an existing guard if you have one and explain what you hope a new recommendation will address, whether that is tooth protection, a fit problem or symptoms needing assessment.

Describe the pattern
Share what you have observed during the day and what someone may have noticed during your sleep. Explain any morning jaw tiredness, tooth sensitivity or repeated restoration damage. The dentist can assess the teeth and discuss whether those findings support a grinding-related concern.
Explain headaches or jaw soreness separately from your observations of grinding, including when each occurs. Mention health and medication changes without assuming they establish the cause. If further assessment is advised, ask what the dental examination has shown and which questions should be taken to another clinician.
Set realistic expectations
A dental guard may be recommended to separate the teeth and help protect them from grinding-related damage. It is not a guarantee that grinding will stop or that every associated symptom will resolve. Ask how the proposed design relates to your teeth and bite.
Discuss daytime clenching and other advice alongside the appliance recommendation. Explain whether you also use sports protection or have sleep concerns, since different appliances have different intended roles. A grinding guard should not be assumed to diagnose or treat a sleep-related breathing disorder, or to replace equipment prescribed for another purpose.
Fit and instructions
At fitting, ask how to insert and remove the guard, when to wear it and what changes should prompt a call. Tell the team about a tight area, rubbing or uncertainty about whether it is seated correctly. A clear demonstration can prevent guesswork later.
Follow cleaning and storage instructions for the particular material rather than applying a method used for another appliance. Avoid heat, bending or home trimming. If you cannot wear the guard as advised, describe the difficulty to the office so fit or instructions can be reviewed before you continue forcing an uncomfortable appliance.
Review with your dental care
A new filling, crown or other dental change may affect how an existing appliance fits. Tell the treating clinician that you use a guard and ask whether it needs to be checked. Keep any recommended review even if the appliance appears unchanged.
Report cracks, worn-through areas or looseness along with any change in your bite or symptoms. Bring the guard to the recommended review so its condition can be assessed directly. The decision about adjustment or replacement should consider both the appliance and whether the original protection plan still fits your current needs.
Planning your appointment
Let us know whether you need a first assessment or help with an existing appliance. Mention broken teeth or restorations and any symptoms that are affecting eating or sleep.
Bring your current guard to the Port Dover office. Ask about the fitting appointment, review arrangements and the estimated cost before deciding on a new appliance.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes, grinding can occur during sleep or without conscious awareness. Someone else’s observations and changes noticed during a dental examination can be useful. An assessment helps determine how those details relate to your mouth and whether care is advised.
A guard is commonly intended to help protect the teeth, and it does not guarantee that grinding will stop. Ask about the specific goal of the proposed appliance and whether other habits, symptoms or health concerns need attention.
A sports mouthguard and an appliance prescribed for grinding have different intended uses. Do not assume one can replace the other. Discuss your activities and the reason for each appliance so the recommendation fits the task.
Do not force it into place or alter it yourself. Contact the dental team and bring it for a fit check. A change to a tooth can affect the appliance, and the appropriate next step depends on the guard and the restoration.
Contact the practice for advice about the soreness and wearing instructions. Explain where it rubs, how long symptoms last and whether your bite feels different. The fit and your symptoms may need review before continuing in the same way.
Remembered a concern after returning to Delhi from a checkup? Tell our Port Dover team what was missed so we can discuss whether a further assessment is needed.
A tooth fracture and repeated grinding belong in the same conversation. Tell our Port Dover team about both when calling from Delhi to discuss assessment and repair.
