A thorough first look

Your first visit builds the baseline for all future care.

A new patient exam is more detailed than a routine checkup. The dentist reviews your medical and dental history, examines your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, and often takes X-rays to build a complete picture. It is also your chance to share goals and concerns and to understand how the practice approaches treatment planning and decisions.

Whether you have recently moved to Windham Centre or are simply looking for a new dental home, our Port Dover office welcomes new patients. Bringing records from your previous dentist can help the team understand your history quickly and avoid repeating X-rays you have already had elsewhere.

Before you arrive

Preparation helps the first visit run smoothly.

  • Health and medication details

Bring a list of your medications, supplements and allergies, plus details of any medical conditions and recent surgeries. Some health issues affect dental care or call for precautions during treatment. If you have dental insurance, bring the plan information with you. Arriving a few minutes early gives you time to complete any forms calmly rather than feeling rushed.

  • Previous dental records

If you have seen another dentist in the past few years, ask them to transfer your X-rays and records before your appointment. This can help avoid repeat imaging and gives the dentist valuable history. Make a note of any treatment that was recommended but not completed, and bring your questions about past work or ongoing concerns you would like reviewed.

The examination

The exam covers every part of your oral health.

A full mouth assessment

The dentist checks each tooth for decay, cracks and wear and examines existing fillings, crowns and other work. Gum health is assessed, often with pocket measurements around each tooth. The tongue, cheeks, palate and throat are examined as part of an oral cancer screening. Your jaw joints and bite are also evaluated for any signs of strain or imbalance.

X-rays and records

Unless recent images are available, a set of X-rays may be recommended to see between teeth, below the gums and around the roots. Photographs may also be taken. Together, these records form a baseline that future visits can be compared against, helping the dentist track changes over time and spot developing problems while they are still small.

Discussing findings

Leave with a clear picture of your needs.

Understanding your oral health

The dentist explains what they found, using X-rays or photos where helpful so you can see it for yourself. If your mouth is healthy, they will tell you so and recommend a recall schedule. If treatment is needed, they will describe the problem, the available options and why they are recommending a particular approach over the alternatives.

Setting priorities

When several issues are found, the dentist can help you set priorities. Urgent problems such as infection or deep decay may need to come first, while cosmetic or less pressing concerns can be planned for later. Ask for a written treatment plan and estimate so you can review it at home, discuss it with family and check your insurance coverage.

Next steps

Your first exam starts an ongoing relationship.

  1. Booking a cleaning or treatment

Many new patients book a hygiene cleaning at the same visit or soon afterward. If treatment is needed, you can schedule appointments based on priority and what is convenient for you. Ask whether several procedures can be combined into fewer appointments to reduce the number of trips you need to make between Windham Centre and Port Dover.

  2. Ongoing care schedule

The dentist will recommend how often to return for checkups and cleanings based on your oral health and risk factors. Booking your next appointment before you leave makes it easier to stay on track. Let the office know whenever your health, medications or contact details change between visits so your records stay accurate and useful.

Planning your appointment

Ready to join our practice?

Call our Port Dover office to book a new patient exam. Let the team know roughly when you last saw a dentist and whether you have any current concerns, pain or broken teeth that should be looked at first.

Request a transfer of your records and X-rays from your previous dentist before the appointment, if you can, to save time on the day.

New patient questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a new patient exam take?

New patient exams usually take longer than routine checkups because they include a full history, a detailed examination and often X-rays. The team can give you an estimate of the appointment length when you book.

Do I need to bring X-rays from my old dentist?

It is helpful but not required. Recent X-rays can reduce the need for repeat imaging and give useful history. Ask your previous dentist to send your records ahead of the appointment so they are ready for review.

Can I have a cleaning on the same day?

Sometimes. Ask when booking whether a cleaning can be scheduled at the same visit. In some cases the gums need to be assessed first to determine which type of cleaning is appropriate, which may mean a second visit.

What if I have not been to a dentist in years?

You are very welcome. The dentist will take a careful look and help you understand where things stand today. If treatment is needed, it can be planned at a pace that suits you, starting with whatever matters most.

Do you see whole families?

Yes. Let the team know the ages of your family members and whether you would like their appointments scheduled close together. Grouping visits can make it easier to manage travel from Windham Centre and fit care around school and work.
