Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaGetting to know you
A new patient exam is more thorough than a routine checkup. The dentist reviews your health history, examines your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, and often takes X-rays to create a complete picture. It is also a chance for you to share concerns, past experiences and goals, so future care can be planned around what matters to you.
If you are joining our practice from Villa Nova, your first exam takes place at our Port Dover office. Let the team know what you would like to focus on and whether you have records from a previous dentist.

Before your visit
You will be asked to complete a health history covering medical conditions, medications, allergies and past surgeries. Bring an up-to-date list of medications and supplements. If you have conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or are pregnant, mention these, as they can influence dental care.
If you have seen another dentist recently, ask whether X-rays and records can be sent ahead. Recent images may avoid the need for repeat X-rays. Notes on past treatment, such as root canals, crowns or orthodontics, can also provide useful context.
Comprehensive exam
Each tooth is checked for decay, cracks and wear. Existing fillings, crowns and bridges are assessed. The dentist looks at how your teeth meet and whether there are signs of grinding. X-rays may be taken to see between teeth and below the gumline where problems can hide.
Gum health is measured, often by recording pocket depths around each tooth. The tongue, cheeks, palate and throat are examined for unusual changes. The jaw joints and muscles may be checked for tenderness or clicking. This comprehensive approach helps identify issues early.
Discussing findings
The dentist will explain the findings, show you X-rays or images and answer questions. If treatment is recommended, ask about the reasons, options and what might happen if you wait. A written plan can help if several items were discussed.
When multiple issues are found, ask which are urgent and which can be scheduled later. Sharing your goals, budget concerns and scheduling constraints helps the dentist suggest a realistic sequence. You do not need to decide on everything at the first visit.
Moving forward
A cleaning may be booked at the same visit or scheduled separately. If treatment is needed, ask how many appointments it will involve and how long each might take, so you can plan travel and time off work.
The dentist will recommend how often you should return for checkups based on your oral health. Booking the next visit before you leave makes it easier to stay consistent. Contact the office if anything changes before your next appointment.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a new patient exam. Mention any concerns, the date of your last dental visit and whether records can be sent from another office.
Bring your health card, a medication list and any questions you would like the dentist to address during the exam.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It is usually longer than a routine checkup. Ask when booking so you can plan your day and travel accordingly.
Often, unless recent X-rays are available from another office. The dentist will explain which images are recommended and why.
Sometimes. Ask when booking whether a cleaning can be included or should be scheduled separately.
You are welcome. Let the team know so they can allow extra time. The focus is on understanding your current oral health.
Ask the team about coordinating appointments for family members. They can discuss the scheduling options available.
Routine exams catch decay, gum changes and wear before they become bigger problems. See what a checkup covers for Villa Nova patients visiting Port Dover.
Unsure about a proposed treatment plan? Villa Nova patients can bring records and questions to our Port Dover office for an independent second opinion.
