Getting to know you

A first exam builds a clear picture of where your mouth stands today.

A new patient exam is usually more thorough than a routine checkup. The dentist reviews your health and dental history, examines your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, and often takes X-rays to establish a baseline. The goal is to understand your current oral health, discuss any concerns and work with you on a care plan that fits.

If you have recently moved to Vanessa, are returning to dental care after a break, or simply want a new office, our Port Dover team is glad to welcome you. Let us know about any worries or specific problems when you book, so we can set aside enough time to address them properly.

Before you come

Bringing the right information makes the visit more useful.

  • Health and dental history

Prepare a list of your current medications, supplements and allergies, along with any health conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or recent surgeries. Note past dental problems, treatments you have had and anything that worries you now. If you have had difficulty getting numb, gagging or feeling anxious at past visits, share that too, so the team can plan.

  • Records from previous dentists

If you have recent X-rays or records from another dental office, ask that office to send them ahead of your appointment. This can avoid repeating images unnecessarily and helps the dentist see how things have changed over time. Bring your insurance information and arrive a little early to complete forms without feeling rushed after the drive.

The exam

The dentist works through your mouth systematically.

  1. A full look at teeth and gums

The dentist examines each tooth for decay, cracks, wear and the condition of existing fillings, crowns or bridges. Gum health is assessed, often by measuring pocket depths around each tooth to check for gum disease. X-rays are commonly taken at a first visit to see between teeth, below the gumline and around roots, unless recent ones are available.

  2. Bite, jaw and soft tissues

Your bite and jaw joints are checked for signs of grinding, clicking or discomfort. The dentist also examines your tongue, cheeks, palate, throat and lips for unusual patches or lumps as part of an oral cancer screening. Photos may be taken to record your teeth and help explain findings during the visit, so you can see what the dentist sees.

Discussing results

You leave knowing what is going well and what needs attention.

Understanding findings

The dentist explains what they found, using X-rays or photos to show you. Some findings may simply need monitoring, while others need treatment. Ask questions about anything unclear, including how urgent each issue is and what could happen if it is left alone. Understanding the reasons helps you make informed decisions about your care with confidence.

Setting priorities together

If treatment is recommended, the dentist will outline options, the order in which work could be done and estimated costs. Urgent problems come first, while others can sometimes be planned over time. You can take the plan home to think about, check insurance coverage and discuss timing that suits your work, the farm calendar and family commitments.

Moving forward

The first visit sets up a routine that works for you.

Cleanings and checkups

Based on your exam, the dentist and hygienist will recommend how often you should return for cleanings and checkups. Some people need visits every six months, others more or less often. A cleaning may be done at the first visit or scheduled separately. Booking your next appointment before you leave helps keep things on track.

Staying in touch

If something changes between visits, such as new pain, swelling, a broken tooth or a change in your health, call the office rather than waiting. Updating the team about new medications or conditions helps them keep your care safe and appropriate. The aim is a long-term relationship that keeps your mouth healthy for years to come.

Planning your appointment

Booking your first visit from Vanessa

Call our Port Dover office to schedule a new patient exam. Let the team know about any pain, concerns or anxiety, and ask whether a cleaning can be booked at the same visit or soon afterward.

Bring your medication list, insurance details and any recent dental records or X-rays, and plan to arrive early to complete new patient forms.

New patient questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a new patient exam take?

It is often longer than a routine checkup because the dentist reviews your history, takes X-rays and examines your mouth thoroughly. The team can give you an estimate when you book, so you can plan your day and travel.

Will I get a cleaning at my first visit?

Sometimes a cleaning can be done at the same visit, while other times it is scheduled separately, especially if gum treatment is needed. Ask when booking what to expect and whether a combined appointment is possible.

Do I need X-rays at my first visit?

X-rays are often taken at a first visit to establish a baseline, unless recent images are available from another office. The dentist will recommend which X-rays are useful based on your history and needs, and explain why.

What if I have not been to a dentist in years?

That is common, and you are welcome. Let the team know when you book. The dentist will focus on understanding your current situation and help you prioritize any treatment needed without judgment, starting with whatever matters most.

Can I bring my records from my previous dentist?

Yes. Ask your previous office to send records and X-rays before your appointment. This helps the dentist understand your history, compare older images with new findings and may avoid repeating X-rays unnecessarily. Most offices need your written consent to transfer records.
