Caring for Townsend patients at our Port Dover office

Every dental service for Townsend

Getting to know you

Your first visit builds the foundation for future care.

A new patient exam is usually more detailed than a routine checkup. The dentist is getting to know your mouth, your health history and your priorities for the first time, so the visit often includes a full examination, X-rays where appropriate and time to talk about past dental experiences and any concerns you want addressed.

Whether you have recently settled in Townsend or are simply looking for a new dental home, you are welcome to book a first exam at our Port Dover office. The team will gather your records, explain what they find and help you plan any care in an order that makes sense for you.

Before your first visit

A little preparation makes the first exam more useful.

  • Gather records and health information

Ask your previous dentist to send recent X-rays and treatment notes if you can, since they show how your mouth has changed and may save repeating images. Make a list of medications, supplements, allergies and medical conditions. If you have had larger work such as implants, root canals, crowns or orthodontics, note roughly when it was done and by whom.

  • Think about your priorities

Think about what matters most to you right now. You might want a sensitive tooth looked at, a smile you feel more confident about, a reliable cleaning routine or a clearer explanation of a plan from another office. Write down your questions and any symptoms beforehand, so the dentist can shape the visit and recommendations around your real priorities.

The examination

The first exam covers your whole mouth.

A full look at teeth and gums

The dentist will examine each tooth for decay, cracks and the condition of existing fillings, crowns or bridges. Gum health is assessed, often by measuring the pockets between gum and tooth. X-rays may be recommended to see between teeth, below the gumline and into the bone, unless suitable recent images have already been sent from your previous office.

Soft tissues, jaw and bite

The dentist also checks the tongue, cheeks, palate and throat for unusual changes, and looks at the jaw joints, chewing muscles and how your teeth fit together. You may be asked about grinding, headaches or jaw pain. This broad look helps identify problems early and gives the dentist a baseline to compare against at future visits.

Discussing findings

You will hear what was found and what it means.

Understanding your oral health

After the exam, the dentist will explain their findings in plain language, covering what looks healthy as well as any areas of concern. You may be shown X-rays or photographs to make the explanation clearer. Ask about anything you do not understand, including how serious a finding is and whether it needs attention now or can be watched for a while.

Building a treatment plan together

If treatment is needed, the dentist will set out the options and suggest an order, separating urgent problems from those that can be planned over time. You are welcome to go home and think it over. Ask how many visits each option would involve, what the alternatives are and what is likely to happen if a particular treatment is delayed.

Moving forward

Your first visit is the start of ongoing care.

  1. Scheduling care that suits you

If treatment is recommended, book appointments in the order discussed, with anything urgent first. Some patients like to spread care across several months, while others prefer to complete it in fewer, longer visits. Let the team know about work schedules, transport from Townsend and any worries about comfort or anxiety, so appointments can be planned around them.

  2. Establishing a routine

The dentist will suggest how often to return for checkups and cleanings based on what they found. Keep up with brushing twice a day and cleaning between your teeth. If pain, swelling or a broken tooth comes up before your next scheduled visit, contact the office rather than waiting, since early attention usually keeps treatment simpler.

Questions about new patient exams

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a new patient exam take?

It usually takes longer than a routine checkup, since the dentist is reviewing your full history and examining your mouth in detail for the first time. Ask when booking how much time to allow so you can plan the rest of your day comfortably.

Will I have X-rays at my first visit?

Often, yes, unless recent X-rays from another office are available. Images help the dentist see areas that cannot be viewed directly, such as between teeth and below the gums. The dentist will explain what is recommended and why before taking any.

Is a cleaning included in the new patient exam?

It depends on scheduling and on what your mouth needs. Some new patients have a cleaning on the same day, while others book it separately once gum health has been assessed. Ask when calling so you know what to expect.

What if I have not seen a dentist in years?

You are welcome to book, and you will not be judged for the gap. The team will focus on understanding your current oral health and priorities. A plan can be built step by step, starting with anything urgent or uncomfortable.

Can I bring a treatment plan from another dentist?

Yes. Bringing a previous plan and the records behind it helps the dentist understand what was recommended. They will carry out their own examination and share their opinion, which may confirm the earlier plan or suggest alternatives.
