Getting to know you

Your first visit builds a complete starting picture.

A new patient exam is usually more thorough than a routine checkup, because the dentist is meeting your mouth for the first time. It brings together your health history, past dental work, current concerns and a careful look at your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues. That baseline helps the team plan care that suits you rather than guessing.

Whether you have recently moved to Teeterville, have been away from the dentist for some time or simply want a new office, you are welcome to book a first visit at our Port Dover practice. Bringing a little information along can help the appointment run smoothly and make the most of the trip.

Before you come

Gathering information ahead saves time in the chair.

  • Health history and medications

Write down your medical conditions, recent surgeries, allergies and every medication or supplement you take, including doses if you know them. Some health issues and prescriptions affect bleeding, healing, gum health or dry mouth, so this list genuinely shapes your dental care. If you have a physician’s letter about a heart condition or joint replacement, bring that too.

  • Previous dental records

Recent X-rays, treatment plans or notes from a previous dentist can avoid repeating images and give the new dentist useful history. Ask your former office whether they can send records, which usually requires your written consent. Even if records are not available, a short summary of past treatment, such as root canals or crowns, is helpful.

The examination

A comprehensive exam looks at everything, not just one tooth.

Teeth, gums and existing work

The dentist checks each tooth for decay, cracks and wear, and reviews fillings, crowns, bridges or implants already in place. Gum pockets are usually measured to assess periodontal health. A set of X-rays may be recommended if none are recent, giving the dentist a view of roots, bone levels and areas between the teeth that cannot be seen directly.

Soft tissues, jaw and bite

The tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate and throat are examined for unusual patches or lumps as part of an oral cancer screening. The dentist may feel the jaw joints and muscles, ask about clicking or headaches and look at how your teeth come together. These details can explain symptoms you may not have connected to your teeth.

Your care plan

You leave with a clear sense of what comes next.

Understanding what was found

After the exam, ask the dentist to walk you through the findings using X-rays, photos or a mirror. It is reasonable to ask what each finding means, what happens if it is left untreated and whether there are different ways to address it. A good explanation lets you make decisions with confidence instead of feeling pressured.

Setting priorities together

If several items need attention, the dentist can help you sort them by urgency. Pain, infection and active decay generally come first, followed by repairs and then elective or cosmetic work. Ask for written estimates and check with your insurer about coverage. A staged plan can also help you schedule trips from Teeterville around work and family.

Moving forward

The first exam is the start of an ongoing relationship.

  1. Booking cleanings and treatment

Many new patients schedule a cleaning soon after the exam, sometimes on the same day if time allows. Treatment appointments can be booked in the order agreed. Ask how long each visit will take and whether any can be combined, so you can plan travel and time off sensibly. Booking before you leave often gives the widest choice of times.

  2. Staying in touch between visits

If something changes before your next appointment, such as new pain, swelling or a broken tooth, call the office rather than waiting. Update the team when your medications or health change. Regular contact helps the dentist keep your plan current and means each visit to Port Dover starts with accurate information. A quick update by phone is usually all it takes.

New patient questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a new patient exam take?

It is usually longer than a routine checkup because the dentist reviews your history, examines everything thoroughly and may take X-rays. Ask the office when booking how much time to allow, so you can plan your trip and any other commitments that day.

I have not seen a dentist in years. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Many new patients have had a gap in care. The aim is to understand where things stand now and plan sensible next steps. Being honest about your history helps the dentist give practical, realistic advice.

Will I get a cleaning at the first visit?

Sometimes a cleaning can be done during or right after the exam, depending on the time available and the condition of your gums. If deeper gum treatment is needed, it may be scheduled separately. Ask the office when you book.

Do I need to bring my old X-rays?

Recent X-rays from another office can be helpful and may avoid repeating images. You can ask your previous dentist to send them with your consent. If they are older or unavailable, new images may be recommended during the exam.

Can my whole family become new patients together?

Often, yes. Let the team know how many family members would like to join and their ages. They can discuss whether appointments can be arranged close together, which can make the trip into Port Dover more efficient.
