Getting to know your mouth

A first exam builds the baseline for all the care that follows.

A new patient exam is usually more detailed than a routine checkup. The dentist reviews your medical and dental history, examines teeth, gums and soft tissues, often takes a set of X-rays and listens to any concerns you bring. The aim is to understand your current oral health and create a record that future visits can be compared against.

Whether you have recently moved to the Renton area, are returning to dental care after a gap or are simply looking for a family practice, a new patient exam at our Port Dover office is a sensible starting point. You will leave with a clearer sense of what, if anything, needs attention and what a suitable recall schedule might look like.

Before your visit

Bringing the right information makes the first visit more productive.

  • Health history and medications

Prepare a list of medications, supplements and allergies, along with any medical conditions, surgeries or upcoming procedures. Conditions such as diabetes, heart problems, pregnancy and bleeding disorders can affect dental care. If you have a medical alert card or a recent list from your pharmacy, bring that too. This information helps the dentist plan safe treatment.

  • Previous dental records

Records and X-rays from a previous dentist can be very useful, as they show changes over time and may reduce the need to repeat images. Ask your former office to send them, or bring copies if you have them. Also note any dental work you know about, such as crowns, root canals or implants, and roughly when it was done.

The examination

The first exam looks at your whole mouth in detail.

Teeth, gums and bite

Each tooth is checked for decay, cracks and wear, and existing fillings and crowns are assessed. Gums are measured for pocket depth and checked for bleeding and recession. The dentist observes how your teeth meet and whether there are signs of grinding. X-rays may be taken to see between teeth, under restorations and into the bone.

Soft tissues and jaw

The dentist examines your tongue, cheeks, palate, throat and lips for unusual patches or lumps as part of an oral cancer screening. The jaw joints and muscles may be checked for tenderness or clicking. Lymph nodes in the neck may be felt. These steps help catch issues beyond the teeth that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Discussing findings

You will hear what the dentist sees and why it matters.

Understanding what was found

After the exam, the dentist explains findings in plain language, using X-rays or photos where helpful. Healthy areas are noted, along with anything that needs treatment or monitoring. If several issues are found, the dentist can help prioritize them by urgency. Ask as many questions as you need; this is your chance to understand your oral health.

Planning next steps

If treatment is recommended, you may receive a plan outlining steps and approximate timing. You do not need to decide everything at once. Take time to consider and ask about alternatives. For Renton patients, the team can discuss how to group appointments sensibly so that treatment can progress without unnecessary separate trips to Port Dover.

Ongoing care

The first exam is the start of a longer relationship.

  1. Cleaning and prevention

A hygiene cleaning may be scheduled at the same visit or separately. The hygienist will remove plaque and tartar, polish teeth and offer advice on brushing and cleaning between teeth based on what was found. They may suggest specific tools or techniques to target areas that need extra attention, such as gum pockets or tight contacts.

  2. Setting a recall schedule

The dentist will recommend how often to return for exams and cleanings based on your risk of decay and gum disease. Some people need more frequent visits, others less. Booking your next appointment before leaving helps keep care consistent and makes it easier to plan around work, school or seasonal commitments well ahead of time.

Before you book

New patient questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long is a new patient exam?

New patient exams are usually longer than routine checkups because they include a detailed history, full examination and often X-rays. The office can tell you the expected length when you book, so you can plan travel and time away from work.

Do I need to bring my old X-rays?

It helps if you can. Recent X-rays from a previous dentist may reduce the need to repeat images and show changes over time. Ask your former office to send them, or bring copies with you to the first appointment.

Will I get a cleaning at my first visit?

Sometimes a cleaning is included or scheduled at the same visit, but it depends on availability and your needs. If you have significant tartar or gum concerns, a separate cleaning appointment may be recommended. Ask when booking.

What if I have not seen a dentist in years?

Many people return to dental care after a long gap. Let the team know so the exam can be planned accordingly. The dentist will focus on understanding your current health and explaining options without judgment.

Can my whole family become patients?

Yes. Let the office know how many family members are interested and their ages. The team can talk about arranging appointments and whether some visits can be scheduled together to make the trip more convenient.
