Getting to know you

A first visit sets the baseline for future care.

A new patient exam is more detailed than a routine checkup. The dentist reviews your health history, listens to your concerns and examines your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues thoroughly. X-rays may be taken to create a complete record. The aim is to understand where your oral health stands today and what, if anything, needs attention.

Whether you have recently moved to Nixon or are simply looking for a new dental home, our Port Dover office welcomes you. The first appointment is a chance to meet the team, ask questions and leave with a clear understanding of your oral health and any recommended next steps.

Before your visit

A little preparation makes the first visit smoother.

  • Health and medication details

Bring a complete list of medications, supplements and allergies, along with details of any medical conditions, surgeries or pregnancies. Some health issues affect dental care or require precautions. If you have a physician or specialist involved in your care, have their contact information ready. This information helps the dentist plan safe treatment from the start.

  • Previous dental records

If you have X-rays or treatment records from a previous dentist, ask them to send copies ahead of your visit. Recent images may reduce the need for new ones, and past treatment notes help the dentist understand your history. If records are not available, that is fine. The dentist will create a new baseline during the exam.

The examination

The first exam is thorough by design.

Teeth, restorations and bite

The dentist checks each tooth for decay, cracks and wear, and examines existing fillings, crowns and bridges for problems. Your bite is assessed for signs of grinding, clenching or uneven contact. X-rays may be recommended to see between teeth, around roots and in the bone. The dentist will explain why images are suggested and what they may show.

Gums, soft tissues and jaw

Gum health is measured to check for inflammation or pockets that suggest gum disease. The tongue, cheeks, palate and throat are examined for unusual changes. The jaw joints and muscles may be checked for tenderness or clicking. Together, these findings create a complete picture that guides future care and allows changes to be tracked accurately.

Talking it through

You should leave understanding what was found.

Reviewing findings together

The dentist will explain the findings in plain language, using X-rays or photos where helpful. Ask questions about anything that is unclear, including how urgent a problem is and what might happen if treatment is delayed. If everything looks healthy, you will hear that too, along with advice for keeping it that way over the coming years.

Setting priorities

If treatment is recommended, the dentist can help you prioritize, addressing urgent issues first and planning less pressing work over time. Ask for a written summary to take home. You are welcome to discuss options with family or seek a second opinion before deciding. There is no pressure to commit to everything at once or on the same day.

Moving forward

Your first visit is the start of ongoing care.

  1. Scheduling care and cleanings

You may be advised to book a hygiene cleaning, follow-up treatment or simply your next routine exam. Ask whether appointments can be combined to reduce travel. The team can explain how often you should return based on your oral health and risk factors, so you can plan your visits from Nixon in a way that works.

  2. Building a long-term relationship

Over time, regular visits allow the dentist to track changes and catch problems early. Let the team know about changes in your health, medications or concerns at each visit. Building a consistent relationship with one dental office makes care more personal and helps your records stay complete and up to date. It also means the team gets to know your preferences and comfort needs.

New patient questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a new patient exam take?

A new patient exam is usually longer than a routine checkup, since it includes a detailed history, full examination and possibly X-rays. Ask the team when booking how much time to set aside for your appointment.

Will I have a cleaning at my first visit?

Sometimes a cleaning can be included, and sometimes it is scheduled separately, depending on availability and your gum health. Ask when booking whether both can be arranged in one appointment. Combining them can save a second trip into Port Dover.

What if I have not seen a dentist in years?

You are welcome. Many new patients have had a gap in care. The team will focus on where you are now and help you plan care at a pace that feels manageable, without judgment or pressure.

Do I need to bring my old X-rays?

It helps if they are available. Ask your previous dentist to send recent X-rays and records. If they are not available, the dentist will take any images needed to establish a baseline for your future visits.

Can I book appointments for my whole family?

Yes. Let the team know the ages of family members and any concerns when you call. They can discuss scheduling options that may help reduce trips for your household, such as booking back-to-back appointments where availability allows.
