Getting to know you

A first exam builds the baseline for every visit that follows.

Your first visit with a new dental team is longer and more detailed than a routine checkup. The dentist reviews your medical and dental history, examines your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues and often takes X-rays to establish a full picture. It is also a chance for you to talk about your goals, worries and past experiences with dental care.

Families and individuals from Langton who are joining our Port Dover practice can use this appointment to start fresh, whether they have been seeing a dentist regularly or have not been in for years. The team will explain the findings clearly and help you decide on next steps at a comfortable pace.

Before you come

Gathering a few items makes the first visit smoother.

  • Records and health information

Bring a list of medications, supplements and allergies, along with details of medical conditions and recent surgeries. If you have dental records or X-rays from a previous office, ask for copies to be sent ahead or bring them along. Any dental coverage information will also be helpful. Arrive a little early to complete forms if needed.

  • Questions and goals

Think about what you want from your dental care. Perhaps you have a specific concern, such as a sensitive tooth or bleeding gums, or want to improve the appearance of your smile. Mention anxiety, difficult past experiences or physical needs. Writing your questions down ensures you do not forget them once the conversation begins in the chair.

The examination

The dentist takes a thorough, unhurried look.

Teeth, gums and bite

Each tooth is examined for decay, cracks, wear and the condition of existing fillings, crowns and bridges. Gum health is measured, including pocket depths and any bleeding or recession. The dentist also looks at how your teeth come together when you bite and whether there are signs of grinding or clenching that could affect your teeth over time.

Soft tissues and jaw

An oral cancer screening checks the tongue, cheeks, palate, throat and floor of the mouth for unusual patches or lumps. The jaw joints and chewing muscles are assessed for tenderness or clicking. If you wear dentures or other appliances, they are examined too. Photographs may be taken to document your current oral health for later comparison.

X-rays and records

Records help track changes over time.

Imaging when needed

X-rays are often recommended at a first visit, especially if recent images are not available from a previous office. They reveal decay between teeth, bone levels, infections and other hidden problems. The type and number of images depend on your history and what the dentist sees during the exam. Ask why each image is suggested.

Creating a baseline

Everything gathered at this visit becomes a baseline for future comparison. Small changes in gum measurements, tooth wear or soft tissues can be noticed more easily when there is a detailed starting point. If you have records from previous dentists, sharing them adds valuable history and may avoid repeating images that are still recent and useful.

Your care plan

Leave with a clear understanding of your options.

  1. Discussing findings

The dentist explains what they found, from healthy areas to concerns that need attention. If treatment is recommended, ask about the reasons, the options available and what might happen if you choose to wait. You can take time to consider the plan and return with questions. Nothing needs to be decided on the spot unless it is urgent.

  2. Prioritizing next steps

When several treatments are needed, they can usually be prioritized based on urgency, comfort and your schedule. Ask whether appointments can be combined to reduce trips into Port Dover. A hygiene visit may be booked next, along with any urgent care. Setting up a recall schedule helps keep your oral health on track going forward.

New patient questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a new patient exam take?

A new patient exam typically takes longer than a routine checkup because it includes a detailed history, full examination and often X-rays. The team will give you an idea of the expected length when you book, so you can plan your day.

Will I have a cleaning at my first visit?

Sometimes the exam and cleaning are combined, and sometimes the cleaning is booked separately, especially if gum treatment is needed. Ask when booking what the first appointment will include and whether combining them is possible.

I have not been to a dentist in years. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Many new patients have had long gaps between visits. The team will focus on where you are now and help you plan care at a pace that suits you, without judgment about the past.

Do I need X-rays if I had them elsewhere recently?

If recent X-rays are available from your previous dentist, ask them to send copies. The dentist will review them and decide whether additional images are needed. This can help avoid unnecessary repeat X-rays and save time at the visit.

Can my whole family become patients?

Families are welcome. Let the team know the ages of family members and any specific needs when booking. Ask whether appointments can be scheduled close together to make visits from Langton more convenient for everyone.
