Getting to know you

A first exam builds the baseline for all your future care.

Your first visit to a new dental office is a chance for the team to learn about your history, your current concerns and what you hope to achieve. A comprehensive exam usually looks at the teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints and soft tissues, often with X-rays. It is also your opportunity to see how the office works and to ask questions before any treatment is planned.

Forestville residents joining our Port Dover practice can begin with a new patient exam. The dentist takes time to understand your situation, explains clearly what was found and helps you prioritize any recommended care in a way that fits your schedule, your budget and the trips you are able to make.

Before your visit

Bringing the right information makes the first visit more productive.

  • Gather health and dental history

List your current medications, supplements, allergies and medical conditions. Note past dental treatment such as root canals, crowns, implants or orthodontics, and any reactions you have had to anaesthetic. If you have concerns about anxiety, gagging or mobility, mention them when booking, so the team can plan the appointment around those needs from the start.

  • Request records from your previous office

Ask your previous dentist to send recent X-rays and records to our Port Dover office before your visit. This helps avoid repeating images unnecessarily and gives the dentist a history to compare against. If records are not available, perhaps because it has been many years, that is fine. The exam will simply establish a fresh baseline.

The exam

A comprehensive exam covers more than a routine check.

A thorough look at your mouth

The dentist examines each tooth, checks existing fillings and crowns, measures gum health and looks at your bite and jaw joints. The tongue, cheeks, palate and throat are checked as part of an oral cancer screening. Photographs may be taken for reference. Each step is explained as it happens, so you know what is being assessed and why.

X-rays and screenings

X-rays are often taken at a first visit if recent ones are not available. They show decay between teeth, bone levels around roots and problems below the gumline that cannot be seen directly. The dentist explains which images are recommended and why. You are welcome to ask about safety or to decline, understanding what information might then be missed.

Understanding results

You should leave with a clear picture and a plan.

A clear summary of your oral health

After the exam, the dentist summarizes the findings in plain language. That might include areas that are healthy, issues to keep an eye on and problems that need treatment. Ask to see photographs or X-rays if it helps. If anything is unclear, ask for it to be explained again. Understanding your starting point helps you make informed choices.

Prioritizing recommended care

If several treatments are recommended, ask which are most urgent and which can reasonably be planned later. A phased approach often makes care more manageable. You can request a written treatment plan and take time to consider it at home. Seeking a second opinion is always reasonable if you feel unsure about any recommendation you receive.

Moving forward

The first exam leads into an ongoing care plan.

  1. Scheduling cleanings and treatment

Depending on the findings, you might book a cleaning, a follow-up appointment for treatment or simply your next routine visit. Ask whether several appointments can be grouped to reduce trips from Forestville. The team can explain roughly how long each visit is likely to take, so you can plan around work, school runs and family commitments.

  2. Setting up regular care

The dentist will suggest how often you should return, based on your oral health rather than a one-size-fits-all rule. Regular visits make it easier to catch changes early. Keep the team updated about new medications or health changes between visits. Building a steady relationship with the office makes each future appointment smoother and more personal.

New patient exam questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a new patient exam take?

It usually takes longer than a routine checkup, because the dentist reviews your history in detail and examines everything thoroughly. X-rays may add some time as well. Ask when booking how long to allow, so you can plan your travel and the rest of your day.

Do I need to bring my old X-rays?

Recent X-rays can be very helpful for comparison. Ask your previous office to send them before your visit. If they are not available, the dentist may recommend taking new images, depending on your history and what the exam reveals.

Will I have a cleaning at the first visit?

Sometimes a cleaning is scheduled on the same day as the exam, and sometimes it is booked separately, depending on the schedule and what the dentist finds. Ask the team when booking what to expect for your first appointment.

What if I have not seen a dentist in years?

That is completely fine. The team will focus on understanding where things stand now and helping you move forward. Being honest about the gap helps the dentist plan appropriately, and there is no judgement about how long it has been.

Can I bring my whole family as new patients?

Let the team know the ages of each family member and any particular needs when you call. They can discuss how to schedule appointments for everyone, including whether visits can be arranged close together to make the trip easier.
