Getting to know your mouth

A first visit builds the baseline for everything that follows.

A new patient exam is usually more thorough than a routine checkup. It gives the dentist a full picture of your teeth, gums, bite and existing dental work, along with your medical history and concerns. This baseline makes it easier to spot changes in future visits and to plan any treatment in an order that makes sense for you.

Whether you have recently moved to the Boston area, are switching dentists or are returning after a long break, you are welcome to book a new patient exam at our Port Dover office. Let the team know if you have any urgent concerns so they can be addressed early.

Before you come

A little preparation helps the first visit run smoothly.

  • Records and health information

If you have recent x-rays or treatment records from another dentist, ask them to send copies before your visit. This may reduce the need for repeat images and gives the dentist useful history. Prepare a complete list of medications, supplements, allergies and medical conditions, including any recent surgeries or hospital stays. Even details that seem unrelated to teeth can matter.

  • Your questions and concerns

Write down anything you have noticed or wondered about: sensitivity, bleeding gums, a tooth that feels different, jaw clicking or cosmetic concerns. Also note any past dental experiences that were difficult. Sharing these early lets the team understand your priorities and plan an appointment that feels comfortable. There is no need to have every question worked out before you arrive.

The exam

The dentist examines everything, not just one tooth.

A full look at teeth and gums

Each tooth is checked for decay, cracks and wear, and existing fillings, crowns and bridges are assessed. Gum health is measured to look for signs of gum disease. The dentist will check your bite, jaw joints and the way your teeth come together, and note anything that may need monitoring at later visits rather than treatment now.

Imaging and screening

X-rays may be recommended to see between teeth, below the gumline and inside the bone, depending on what records are available. The soft tissues of the mouth, including the tongue, cheeks and palate, are examined as part of an oral cancer screening. The dentist will explain the purpose of each step as the exam goes along.

Your results

Clear explanations help you make informed choices.

Understanding the overall picture

After the exam, the dentist will explain what they found in plain terms. Ask to see x-rays or photos if helpful. They will note which findings are healthy, which need monitoring and which need treatment. Take your time to ask questions until the overall picture makes sense to you. Written notes can help if several findings are discussed.

Building a plan

If treatment is recommended, ask which items are most urgent and which can wait. A prioritised plan helps you schedule care in a way that suits your health, comfort and life. You are welcome to take the plan home, think it over and ask follow-up questions before deciding, by phone or at another visit to the office.

Moving forward

The first exam sets up a routine that suits you.

  1. Cleaning and preventive care

A professional cleaning may be done at the same visit or scheduled separately, depending on your gum health and time available. The hygienist can give advice on brushing, flossing and products that suit your mouth. Preventive steps like fluoride may be suggested if you are at higher risk of decay. Ask why each recommendation suits you.

  2. Scheduling follow-up

The dentist will recommend how often you should return for checkups and cleanings based on what they found. If treatment is planned, appointments can be arranged in a sensible order. Let the team know if anything changes in your health or mouth before your next scheduled visit, so the plan stays current and nothing important is missed.

Before you book

New patient questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a new patient exam take?

It is usually longer than a routine checkup because the dentist gathers a full history and examines everything in detail. Ask when booking how much time to allow, especially if a cleaning is planned the same day.

Should I bring my old x-rays?

Recent x-rays from your previous dentist can be helpful. Ask that office to send them before your appointment. The dentist will decide whether they are sufficient or whether new images are needed for a complete picture.

What if I have not seen a dentist in years?

You are welcome. Many new patients are returning after a long gap. The team will focus on understanding your current situation and helping you plan next steps, without judgment about how long it has been.

Can I have a cleaning at my first visit?

Often, yes, though it depends on your gum health and appointment time. If more extensive cleaning is needed, it may be scheduled over additional visits. Ask when booking what to expect and how much time to allow.

What if I need a lot of treatment?

The dentist will help you prioritise. Urgent issues can be addressed first, with other treatment planned over time. You are welcome to take the plan home and ask questions before deciding how to proceed with each step.
