Fillings and crowns can loosen because of new decay underneath, wear, a hard bite or simply age. When one falls out, the tooth may feel sharp, sensitive or rough, or it may not hurt at all. Either way, the exposed tooth is more vulnerable to breaking and decay, so it is worth having it assessed before the situation becomes more urgent.
Walsingham patients who have lost a filling or crown can call our Port Dover office to explain what happened. The team will advise how soon to come in, and the dentist will check the tooth to see whether the original restoration can be reused or a new one is needed.

In the meantime
If a crown comes off, keep it in a clean container and bring it with you. Do not throw away broken filling pieces either, though they usually cannot be reused. Brush gently around the area and rinse after eating to keep food out of the exposed tooth. Chew on the other side of your mouth.
Pharmacy dental cement or dental wax can temporarily cover a sharp edge or hold a crown in place for a short time. Follow package instructions carefully and do not use household glue. If you cannot seat the crown easily, leave it out rather than forcing it. Avoid very hot, cold and sweet foods.
Urgency
Call promptly if the tooth is painful, very sensitive, has broken or the gum around it is swollen. These signs may mean decay has reached deeper into the tooth or infection is present. A crown that came off a tooth with a post may need the post checked too.
If there is no pain and the tooth seems intact, it is still important to book an appointment soon. An exposed tooth can break more easily and decay faster. A crown left out for too long may no longer fit as nearby teeth shift. Ask the team how soon you should be seen.
Repair options
The dentist checks the tooth and the crown for decay, cracks and fit. If the tooth is healthy and the crown is intact, it may be cleaned and recemented. An X-ray may be taken to look for decay under the old restoration or problems at the root. You will be told whether recementing is likely to be reliable.
If decay has developed or the tooth has broken, the old restoration usually cannot simply be put back. A new filling, an onlay or a new crown may be needed. In some cases, root canal treatment or a core build-up is required first. The dentist will explain the options and why one is recommended.
Preventing it
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth every day, paying attention to the edges of fillings and crowns where decay often starts. Regular checkups and X-rays help the dentist catch problems early, sometimes before a restoration fails. Limiting sugary snacks also reduces decay risk.
Sticky candies, chewing ice, biting hard objects and grinding can loosen or break restorations. If you clench or grind, a night guard may help protect your dental work. If a crown or filling feels loose, rough or different, call the office rather than waiting for it to fall out.
Planning your appointment
From Walsingham, call our Port Dover office to describe what came out, whether the tooth hurts and whether you have the crown. The team will advise on urgency and the next available appointment.
Bring the crown or any pieces you saved, and let the team know if the tooth had a root canal or a post placed before.
Before you book

Do not use household glue. Pharmacy dental cement may hold it briefly, but the tooth should be checked by a dentist. Decay or damage underneath may need treatment before the crown is reattached.
It depends. If there is pain, swelling or a broken tooth, call promptly. Without symptoms, it is less urgent but should still be seen soon to protect the tooth.
Common reasons include decay under the crown, cement wearing away, a hard bite or a fractured tooth. The dentist will examine the tooth to find the cause.
If the crown and tooth are both in good condition, it may be recemented. If there is decay or damage, a new crown may be needed. The dentist will assess both.
Small pieces of filling are usually passed without harm. If you have trouble breathing or think you inhaled it, seek medical care. Call the dental office to arrange repair of the tooth.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by a large filling, crack or root canal. Walsingham patients can learn about materials, visits and long-term care.
Composite fillings repair decay and small breaks with tooth-coloured material. Walsingham patients can see how the dentist decides on one and how to care for it afterwards.
