Protect the tooth until repair

When dental work comes loose, the tooth underneath needs protecting.

Fillings and crowns can loosen or fall out because of new decay underneath, wear over time, a hard or sticky bite or a crack in the tooth. Sometimes there is no pain at all; other times the exposed tooth is very sensitive to air, temperature or chewing. Either way, the tooth is more vulnerable to damage and decay until it has been properly restored.

If this happens while you are at home in Vittoria, call our Port Dover office and describe what came out and how the tooth feels. The team will discuss how soon you should be seen and current availability, and give you advice on keeping the tooth comfortable and clean in the meantime.

Right away

A few simple actions help protect the tooth until your appointment.

  1. Find and keep the piece

If a crown has come off, rinse it gently and keep it in a clean, sealed container. Bring it to your appointment, since it may be possible to recement it if the crown and tooth are in good condition. A lost filling usually cannot be reused, but noting when it came out helps the dentist understand what happened.

  2. Keep the tooth comfortable

Rinse with warm water and keep the area clean by brushing gently. Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, cold, sticky or hard foods. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may cover a sensitive area for a short time, but follow the package directions and do not use household glue under any circumstances.

Assess the urgency

Your symptoms help determine how quickly the tooth should be seen.

  • When to call promptly

Call promptly if the tooth is painful, very sensitive, broken, has a sharp edge cutting your tongue or cheek, or if you see swelling. A tooth that has had root canal treatment and lost its crown may be at risk of fracture. Pain that keeps you awake or lingers after hot or cold may suggest the nerve is affected.

  • When a short wait may be okay

If the tooth is comfortable and intact, the team may be able to schedule a non-urgent appointment soon. Continue to protect and clean the area. Do not delay too long, because an exposed tooth can decay or break further, and teeth may shift slightly, making a lost crown harder to refit. Call within a few days.

Repair options

The dentist examines why the restoration failed before repairing it.

Recementing or replacing a crown

If the crown and tooth are both sound, the crown may be cleaned and recemented. If there is decay under the crown, the tooth is cracked or the crown is damaged, a new crown may be needed. A temporary crown can protect the tooth while a new one is made. The dentist will explain why one approach is recommended.

Replacing a filling

A lost filling is usually replaced after removing any decay and checking the remaining tooth. If the cavity is large, the dentist may suggest an onlay or crown for more strength. X-rays may be taken to look for decay or nerve involvement. You will be told the options and why one suits the tooth best.

Preventing repeats

Understanding the cause helps your next restoration last longer.

Why restorations come loose

Decay at the edges, grinding, chewing hard objects and very sticky foods can all loosen restorations. Older fillings and crowns also wear out eventually. The dentist will look at the tooth and your bite to understand why this happened, which may lead to suggestions such as a night guard or changes in diet or habits.

Protecting dental work

Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth help prevent decay around restorations. Regular checkups allow the dentist to spot worn or leaking restorations before they fail. Avoid using teeth to open packages or chew ice. Contact the office if a restoration feels rough, high or loose. Catching problems early can save the tooth underneath.

Lost filling and crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Can I glue my crown back on myself?

Do not use household glue, as it can damage the tooth and crown and make proper repair difficult. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may be used briefly if you follow directions carefully. Call the office so the crown and tooth can be assessed properly.

Is a lost filling an emergency?

It depends on symptoms. Severe pain, swelling or a sharp broken edge needs prompt contact. A painless lost filling still needs attention fairly soon, because the exposed tooth is vulnerable to decay and breakage. Call to discuss timing with the team.

Why did my crown fall off?

Common reasons include decay under the crown, a weakened cement seal, a cracked tooth or biting something hard or sticky. The dentist will examine the tooth to find the cause so the repair or replacement addresses it and is more likely to last.

Can the same crown be reused?

Often, if the crown is intact and the tooth is healthy. Bring the crown with you. If decay or damage is found, a new crown may be needed. The dentist will explain the options after examining both the crown and the tooth underneath.

What if I swallowed my crown or filling?

Swallowed pieces usually pass without harm, but contact your physician for advice. If you are coughing, wheezing or having trouble breathing, the piece may have been inhaled and you should seek emergency medical care right away.
