Fillings and crowns can come loose because of new decay underneath, wear over time, a sticky or hard food, or a crack in the tooth. Once they are gone, the tooth beneath is more exposed to temperature, bacteria and chewing forces. It may feel sharp, sensitive or simply strange. Even without pain, the tooth should be checked soon.
If you are in Vanessa and lose a filling or crown, call our Port Dover office to describe what happened. The team can advise you on protecting the tooth and how soon you should be seen. Keep any crown that came off, as it may sometimes be recemented after the tooth is examined.

Right away
If a crown has come off, rinse it gently and keep it in a clean container or plastic bag. Do not throw it away, since the dentist may be able to reuse it if it and the tooth are in good condition. If pieces of a filling came out, you can bring them, though new filling material will usually be used.
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Avoid chewing on that side and stay away from sticky, hard or very hot and cold foods. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can cover a sensitive area or hold a crown briefly, but follow package directions carefully. Never use household glue, which can damage the tooth and crown.
How urgent
Call the office promptly if the tooth is very painful, sensitive to air or temperature, broken, sharp enough to cut your tongue, or if your gum is swollen. A front tooth crown that has come off may also feel urgent for appearance reasons. Pain, swelling or fever can suggest infection, which needs attention sooner rather than later.
If the tooth is comfortable and not broken, you may be able to wait a short time for an appointment, but do not delay too long. Exposed teeth can decay or crack more easily, and teeth can shift, making a crown harder to refit. Call the office and describe the situation so the team can advise you.
Repair options
The dentist examines the tooth and crown and may take an X-ray to check for decay or cracks. If the crown and tooth are healthy, the crown may be cleaned and recemented. If the crown is damaged, the tooth has decay underneath, or the fit is poor, a new crown may be needed. A temporary crown can protect the tooth meanwhile.
For a lost filling, the dentist removes any decay, checks the remaining tooth and places a new filling. If the tooth has lost a lot of structure, an onlay or crown may be recommended to protect it. The dentist will explain why a particular repair is suggested and what the appointments involve, before any work starts.
Preventing a repeat
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth every day, since decay at the edges of fillings and crowns is a common reason they fail. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy and very sticky foods like toffee. If you grind or clench, ask whether a night guard would help protect your restorations from wear.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to spot worn or leaking fillings and crowns before they fall out. X-rays help detect decay underneath restorations. If a filling feels rough, a crown feels loose, or you notice sensitivity, call the office rather than waiting. Early repair is usually simpler than dealing with a lost restoration later on.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as you notice a lost filling or crown. Describe any pain or sensitivity and whether you still have the crown, so the team can advise you on timing.
Bring the crown or filling pieces in a clean container, and let the team know if the tooth has had a root canal or other treatment.

Often a crown can be recemented if it and the tooth underneath are healthy and the fit is still good. The dentist will check for decay and damage first. Never use household glue, which can harm the tooth and crown and make proper repair harder.
It depends. Severe pain, swelling or a broken tooth need prompt attention. If the tooth is comfortable, it may be able to wait a short time, but it should still be repaired soon to prevent further damage or decay.
Temporary dental cement can protect a sensitive tooth or hold a crown briefly, but it is not a long-term fix. Follow the directions carefully and see the dentist as soon as possible for a proper repair.
Common reasons include decay underneath, wear, a crack in the tooth, sticky or hard foods, or grinding. The dentist will look for the cause when they examine the tooth, which helps them choose the most durable repair.
Swallowed crowns usually pass without harm, but call the dental office for advice, and mention it to your physician if you feel any discomfort. The tooth will still need a new crown. If you inhaled it and are coughing, wheezing or having trouble breathing, seek emergency medical care immediately.
A crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Vanessa patients can learn when crowns are recommended, what the two visits involve and how to make one last.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured material. Vanessa patients can learn how they are placed, how long they last and how to care for them.
