Fillings and crowns can come loose because of decay underneath, worn cement, a fracture in the tooth or biting something hard or sticky. Once the restoration is gone, the tooth may feel sharp, sensitive or rough. It is also more vulnerable to further breakage and decay, so arranging repair soon is wise even when there is no pain.
If a filling or crown comes out while you are at Peacock Point, call our Port Dover office to describe what happened. The team can suggest how to protect the tooth in the meantime and how soon it should be examined.

Right away
If a crown comes off, keep it in a clean container and bring it with you. It may be possible to recement it if it and the tooth are in good condition. For a filling, collect any pieces, though fillings usually cannot be reused. Check whether any part of the tooth itself has broken away along with the restoration.
Rinse gently and keep the area clean. Avoid chewing on that side. If an edge is sharp, cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum. Over-the-counter temporary dental cement may protect the tooth briefly, but follow instructions carefully. Do not use household glue to reattach a crown, as it can harm the tooth and gums.
Symptoms
If there is no pain and the tooth is not sharp, the situation is usually less urgent, but the tooth should still be seen soon. Exposed tooth structure can decay quickly or fracture. Keep it clean, avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods on that side and arrange an appointment within a reasonable time.
Call promptly if the tooth is very sensitive or painful, if a large part of the tooth has broken, if there is swelling or if you cannot eat comfortably. Pain may indicate the nerve is exposed or irritated. Swelling may suggest infection. These situations need faster assessment to protect the tooth and relieve discomfort.
Repair
If the crown and tooth are intact, the dentist may clean and recement the crown. If decay has formed under it or the tooth has fractured, the tooth may need treatment and a new crown. X-rays may be taken to check for decay or infection. The dentist will explain why the crown came off and what is needed.
A lost filling is usually replaced with a new filling. If the cavity has grown or the tooth is weakened, an inlay, onlay or crown may be recommended for better strength. If the nerve is involved, root canal treatment may be discussed. Ask the dentist to compare options for your tooth.
Prevention
Avoid chewing ice, hard candies and very sticky foods like toffee, which can dislodge restorations. If you grind or clench, ask about a night guard. Brush and clean between teeth carefully, especially around the edges of crowns and fillings where decay can begin unnoticed.
Regular examinations allow the dentist to spot worn fillings, open margins and early decay before restorations fail. If you see a different dentist during part of the year, share records so each one knows the history of your restorations. Report looseness or sensitivity promptly rather than waiting for it to fall out.

Often, if the crown and the tooth beneath it are in good condition. The dentist will check for decay or damage before recementing. If the tooth has changed, a new crown may be needed for a proper fit.
It may not be urgent if there is no pain, but the tooth is vulnerable. Arrange to have it seen soon. Call promptly if you have pain, sensitivity, swelling or a broken tooth.
Do not use household glue. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may hold a crown briefly, but have the tooth assessed. Incorrect placement can damage the tooth or affect your bite.
Swallowed pieces usually pass without issue, but contact the office. If you are coughing, wheezing or have difficulty breathing, it may have been inhaled, and you should seek emergency care.
Common causes include decay around the filling, wear, a cracked tooth or biting something hard. The dentist will examine the tooth to identify the cause and recommend an appropriate repair.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by decay, cracks or root canal care. Peacock Point patients can review crown options at our Port Dover dental office.
A cavity or small fracture may be restored with composite. Peacock Point patients can learn how these tooth-coloured fillings are placed at our Port Dover office.
