Fillings and crowns can come loose because of new decay underneath, a fracture in the tooth, wear over time or biting on something sticky or hard. Sometimes there is no pain at all. Other times the exposed tooth is sensitive to temperature or pressure. Either way, the tooth is more vulnerable to damage and decay until it is repaired.
If you are in Normandale and a filling or crown has come out, call our Port Dover office to describe what happened. The team can advise on protecting the tooth and arrange an appointment to assess and restore it.

Right away
If a crown comes off, keep it in a clean container and bring it to your appointment. It may be possible to re-cement it if both the crown and the tooth are in good condition. A lost filling is usually not reusable, but note when and how it came out.
Avoid chewing on the affected side and keep the area clean by brushing gently. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can cover a sensitive tooth or hold a crown briefly, but do not use household glue. If the tooth is painful, use over-the-counter pain relief as directed.
Why it happened
New decay can form around the edges of a filling or under a crown, weakening the seal until the restoration loosens. A crack in the tooth can also cause a filling or crown to fall out. The dentist will examine the tooth and may take x-rays to check for these problems.
Older restorations naturally wear and can loosen over time. Grinding, clenching and biting hard or sticky foods add stress. If grinding is a factor, the dentist may suggest a night guard. Identifying the cause helps reduce the chance of the problem happening again.
Repair options
If the crown is intact and fits well, and the tooth beneath is healthy, it may be cleaned and re-cemented. If there is decay, a fracture or the crown is damaged, a new crown may be needed. The dentist will explain what was found and why one option is recommended.
A lost filling is typically replaced with a new filling. If a large portion of the tooth is missing, an inlay, onlay or crown may be suggested for better support. Deep decay or nerve involvement may require additional treatment, such as a root canal, before restoration.
Preventing repeats
Avoid chewing ice, hard candy and very sticky foods. Brush twice daily and clean between teeth to keep the margins free of plaque. If you notice sensitivity, a rough edge or a change in your bite after repair, contact the office so it can be checked and adjusted.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to inspect fillings and crowns for wear or gaps before they fail. Catching a small problem early often means a simpler repair. If you are prone to losing restorations, ask whether different materials or designs might be more durable.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to explain whether a filling or crown came out and whether the tooth hurts. The team will advise on timing and arrange an appointment.
Bring the crown if you have it, and avoid using household glue or adhesives to reattach it.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
If the crown and tooth are in good condition, the dentist may be able to re-cement it. Do not use household glue. Bring the crown to your appointment.
It may not be urgent if there is no pain, but the tooth should be repaired soon. Pain, swelling or a sharp edge should be reported promptly.
Pharmacy temporary cement can provide short-term protection but is not a permanent fix. Follow package directions and arrange a dental visit.
Common causes include decay underneath, a fracture or wear of the cement. The dentist will examine the tooth to identify the reason.
Not always. If the crown and tooth are sound, re-cementing may work. Damage or decay may mean a new crown is needed.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to restore strength and shape. Normandale patients can learn when crowns are advised and what fitting involves at our Port Dover office.
Composite fillings repair decay with a tooth-coloured material. Normandale patients can learn when they suit, how they are placed and how to care for them.
