When an adult tooth is knocked completely out, the cells on its root begin to dry and die quickly. Replanting the tooth soon, or keeping it moist in the right liquid, gives it the best chance of reattaching. Baby teeth are different and should not be put back, because replanting can harm the adult tooth developing underneath.
If this happens at Long Point, whether on a dock, beach or trail, act quickly and call our Port Dover office for guidance once any serious injury has been ruled out.

Immediate steps
Find the tooth and pick it up by the white chewing part. Avoid touching the root. If it is dirty, rinse briefly with milk or clean water for a few seconds. Do not scrub, dry or wrap it in tissue, since this damages the root cells needed for reattachment.
If the person is alert and cooperative, gently push the tooth back into its socket and have them bite on clean gauze to hold it. If that is not possible, place the tooth in milk or saline, or keep it inside the cheek of an adult who will not swallow it. Then call a dentist immediately.
Baby or adult tooth?
Do not replant a knocked-out baby tooth. Control bleeding with gentle pressure, comfort the child and call the dental office for an assessment. The dentist will check for damage to surrounding teeth and the developing adult tooth beneath, which can sometimes be affected by the injury.
Adult teeth usually start appearing around six years of age. If you are unsure whether a tooth is baby or permanent, keep it moist in milk and call the office right away. The team can help you decide what to do while you make your way in.
Dental treatment
If the tooth has been replanted, the dentist will check its position and may adjust it. If it was stored, the socket is gently cleaned and the tooth is reinserted when appropriate. A flexible splint attached to neighbouring teeth holds it in place while healing begins.
X-rays help check for fractures in the tooth, root or bone. Lips, gums and other teeth are examined too. The dentist may discuss tetanus protection if the tooth was contaminated with soil, and will give instructions for cleaning, diet and follow-up.
Healing
Eat soft foods, brush gently and use any rinse prescribed. The splint is usually removed after a set period. Many replanted teeth need root canal treatment because the nerve rarely survives. Keep all follow-up appointments, even if the tooth feels fine.
Some replanted teeth last many years, while others are gradually replaced by bone or develop problems. The dentist will monitor the tooth and discuss replacement options if needed. Wearing a mouthguard for sports and active play helps prevent future injuries.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 immediately and explain what happened. Bring the tooth in milk or replanted, and come in as directed by the team.
If there is a head injury, loss of consciousness or heavy bleeding, seek emergency medical care first.

As soon as possible. The best chance of reattachment is when the tooth is replanted within minutes or stored properly in milk. Call a dentist immediately for guidance and an urgent assessment.
Water is not ideal for long periods because it can damage root cells. Milk or saliva is better. If nothing else is available, use water briefly while arranging urgent care.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the developing adult tooth beneath. Control bleeding, comfort your child and call the dental office for an assessment of the area.
Often, yes, because the nerve frequently does not survive. The dentist will monitor the tooth and recommend root canal treatment at an appropriate time to support healing.
If the tooth cannot be replanted or fails later, replacement options such as an implant, bridge or partial denture can be discussed. The dentist will explain timing and suitability.
Falls, boating bumps and sports collisions can loosen, push or break teeth. Long Point patients should call our Port Dover office promptly after a mouth injury.
A fall on the dock, a toothache at bedtime or a swollen cheek worries any parent. Long Point families can call our Port Dover office for urgent guidance.
