When an adult tooth is knocked completely out of its socket, the chances of saving it are best when it is handled properly and put back or seen by a dentist as quickly as possible. The root surface contains delicate cells that help the tooth reattach, and these cells can be damaged by drying out or by scrubbing. Your first few actions matter a great deal.
If this happens to someone in Boston, call our Port Dover office right away for guidance and to let the team know you are coming. Follow the steps below while you travel, and bring the tooth with you stored in milk or the person’s saliva.

Right away
Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown, the part you normally see, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it very briefly with milk or cool water for a few seconds. Do not scrub it, wipe it, or wrap it in tissue or cloth, since this can damage the cells on the root surface needed for reattachment.
For an adult tooth, if the person is alert and cooperative, try gently pushing it back into its socket facing the right way, then have them bite softly on clean gauze or cloth to hold it. If this is not possible, keep the tooth moist in milk, saline or the person’s saliva and get to a dentist immediately.
Storing the tooth
Cold milk is a widely recommended storage option and is easy to find. A container of the person’s own saliva also works, or the tooth can be held inside an adult’s cheek if they are alert and there is no risk of swallowing it. Special tooth storage solutions, if available in a first aid kit, are another good choice.
Do not let the tooth dry out, even for a short time. Avoid storing it in plain tap water for long periods, as this can harm root cells. Never place a baby tooth back in its socket, since doing so may damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Bring the tooth with you regardless, so the dentist can see what was lost.
At the office
If the tooth has not been put back, the dentist will gently clean the socket and replant it. If it was replaced at the scene, they will check its position. A flexible splint is usually attached to neighbouring teeth to hold it steady while it heals. X-rays help confirm the position and check for fractures.
The dentist will also examine the surrounding teeth, gums, lips and jaw for other damage. Cuts may need care, and nearby teeth may have been loosened. Depending on how long the tooth was out and how it was stored, root canal treatment may be planned within the following weeks to protect it from infection and further damage.
Healing
Eat soft foods, avoid biting on the injured tooth and keep the area clean with gentle brushing. Follow any instructions about rinses or medication. Contact the office if pain increases, swelling develops, the splint comes loose or the tooth feels unstable. These signs may need attention before your next scheduled visit, so call rather than wait.
Even after the splint is removed, the tooth will need regular checks over months and sometimes years. Problems such as infection, root resorption or colour change can develop over time. Attending follow-up appointments gives the best chance of catching issues early and keeping the tooth as long as possible. If the tooth is eventually lost, replacement options can be discussed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office immediately after a tooth is knocked out. Let the team know you are on your way, whether the tooth was put back and how it is being stored, so they can prepare for your arrival.
Keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva during the trip, and bring any other tooth fragments you found at the scene.

As soon as possible. The chance of saving a knocked-out adult tooth is highest when it is replanted quickly and kept moist. Call the office right away and head in while following the storage steps described above.
For an adult tooth, if the person is alert and cooperative, gently replanting it can help. Hold it by the crown and push it in facing the right way. If you are unsure or cannot do it, store it in milk and see a dentist quickly.
Do not replant baby teeth, as this may damage the developing adult tooth below. Keep the child comfortable, control bleeding and contact the dentist for advice and an examination of the area, since the gum and nearby teeth may be hurt.
Not always. Success depends on how long it was out, how it was stored and the condition of the root. Even with the best care, some teeth do not survive long term, which is why follow-up visits matter.
Often, yes. Many replanted adult teeth need root canal treatment because the nerve is damaged during the injury. The dentist will explain the timing and reasons based on your situation, how long the tooth was out and the x-rays.
