Consider how much of the tooth needs protection

Some repairs call for a custom restoration of a selected area.

When a back tooth needs more than a straightforward filling, a full crown is not the only possibility to discuss. An inlay fits within the tooth's raised chewing surfaces, while an onlay also covers one or more of those cusps. Both are made to fit a prepared area rather than built entirely as a direct filling.

Waterford residents can ask about these options at our Port Dover practice. The decision depends on the damage, remaining tooth and bite. An assessment should explain why a partial restoration is suitable, or why another approach offers a more appropriate way to restore that particular tooth.

Assess the remaining structure

Determine which parts need protection before selecting the shape of the repair.

  • Identify which areas need restoring or covering

The dentist evaluates decay, existing restorations and any weakened or fractured areas. Ask which parts of the tooth can be retained and which need coverage. A restoration must do more than fill the space you can see; it needs to work with the strength and shape of what remains.

  • Discuss bite history and findings beneath existing work

Describe chewing discomfort, earlier fractures and any known grinding, including repeated repairs to this tooth. Ask what remains uncertain beneath an existing restoration. If removing it may reveal more damage, clarify how that finding could alter the coverage recommended and how the revised plan would be discussed before continuing.

Compare the realistic alternatives

Compare the coverage each suitable option provides for the actual damage.

Balance retained structure with the protection needed

Ask what each suitable option would cover and how much preparation it requires. The aim is not automatically to choose the smallest restoration or the most extensive one. The recommendation should balance retaining useful tooth structure with providing the protection and function the damaged area needs.

Relate material and cost to the complete repair

Discuss how material choices relate to the tooth's position, appearance and expected chewing forces. Ask about limitations and later maintenance for the proposed repair. When comparing estimates, identify the preparation, fabrication and fitting stages included so the price is understood alongside the work and protection offered by each suitable option.

Understand how the fit is created

Follow the prepared tooth through its records, fabrication and final fitting.

  1. Confirm how the restoration is made and any temporary stage

After preparation, an impression or scan records the tooth for the restoration to be made. Ask how fabrication and fitting are arranged for your case, including the expected number of visits. If a temporary stage is planned, obtain its eating and cleaning instructions and a contact route for loosening or damage before you leave the preparation appointment.

  2. Review contacts and bite before the repair is finished

At placement, the dentist checks the fit, contact with neighbouring teeth and bite before securing and finishing the restoration. Tell the clinician about any unusual pressure or an area that feels uneven. Those details are worth addressing while the restoration is being evaluated.

Monitor function after treatment

Bring back the concerns that become apparent when eating and cleaning at home.

Describe persistent food catching or an uneven bite

Follow the after-placement instructions and ask how to clean the restoration's contacts with neighbouring teeth. If food repeatedly catches, floss shreds or the tooth seems to meet first in your bite, describe when it happens. Those details help the dentist assess the tooth and repair instead of leaving you to decide whether a persistent sensation is simply part of adjusting.

Keep the restored tooth under examination over time

Keep the restoration under review at examinations and mention a new rough edge, sensitivity or a change in chewing comfort. An inlay or onlay is not a guarantee against future damage. Its outlook depends on the supporting tooth, the forces involved and ongoing care.

Planning your appointment

Discuss partial coverage before your trip from Waterford.

Tell our Port Dover team about the tooth being considered and any previous advice. Confirm whether the appointment is for a restorative assessment or a planned treatment stage.

Bring relevant records and explain any deadline affecting the sequence. Ask about the estimate, likely visits and interim protection before arranging your schedule around the final restoration.

Questions about inlays and onlays

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

What is the practical difference between an inlay and an onlay?

An inlay restores an area within the cusps of a tooth; an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Ask which parts of your tooth need to be covered and why. The design should follow the condition of the tooth rather than a preference for one name.

Are these restorations always better than a large filling?

No restoration type is best in every situation. The dentist considers the damaged area, remaining structure, bite and clinical requirements. Ask why the recommended option is suitable for your tooth and how the alternatives compare in preparation, function and maintenance.

Can an onlay help me avoid a full crown?

Partial coverage may be appropriate when enough suitable tooth structure remains, but that requires assessment. Ask whether an onlay can provide the protection needed and what findings would favour a crown. Preserving structure matters alongside the predictability of the repair.

Will I have a temporary restoration?

That depends on the fabrication process and number of appointments planned. Confirm the arrangement before preparation begins. If a temporary is used, ask about cleaning, eating and whom to contact if it is damaged or lost before the final restoration is ready.

What if the tooth still feels different after placement?

Describe the sensation to the practice, including whether it occurs with biting, temperature or cleaning. The dentist can review the restoration and tooth. A persistent or worsening problem should be assessed rather than repeatedly testing the area yourself or assuming it must settle.
