Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations, often ceramic or composite, that are bonded into or onto a damaged tooth. An inlay fits within the cusps of a back tooth, while an onlay covers one or more cusps. They can strengthen a tooth with a large cavity or broken filling while preserving more natural structure than a full crown.
For Walsh patients, inlays and onlays are planned at our Port Dover office after the tooth has been examined. The dentist will explain why this option is suggested, how it compares with a large filling or crown and what the appointments are likely to involve from start to finish.

When suggested
These restorations are often recommended when a cavity or old filling is too large for a direct filling to be reliable, or when a single cusp has cracked but the rest of the tooth is sound. They can also replace old metal fillings in back teeth when the remaining walls need reinforcement. The goal is to strengthen the tooth while keeping as much of it as possible.
A direct filling may be simpler and less costly for smaller areas, while a crown may be safer for a tooth with extensive damage or after root canal treatment. The dentist will weigh durability, tooth preservation and cost so you can make an informed decision. Ask to see the X-ray and photos, which often make the reasoning much easier to follow.
Materials
Ceramic inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured, stain-resistant and bonded to the tooth, which helps hold weakened walls together. Composite versions are also tooth-coloured and may be easier to repair if they chip. The dentist will consider your bite, any grinding habit and your appearance preferences when recommending one, and explain how each is likely to wear.
Gold is very durable and gentle on the opposing teeth, though it is visible and is less commonly chosen today for that reason. Discuss which matters most to you, whether appearance, longevity or cost, so the recommendation reflects your priorities as well as clinical factors. There is rarely one perfect answer, only a sensible fit for your situation.
Treatment
The tooth is numbed, decay and old filling material are removed and the tooth is shaped to receive the restoration. Impressions or digital scans are taken, and a temporary restoration is placed to protect the tooth. The final piece is then made in a dental lab. Ask about the timing between visits, so you can plan the return trip from Walsh around your week.
At the second appointment, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay is tried in and checked for fit, contact with neighbouring teeth and bite. It is then bonded in place, final adjustments are made and the surface is polished smooth. Tell the dentist if anything feels high, rough or uncomfortable before you leave the chair.
Aftercare
Mild sensitivity is common for a few days after the final restoration is bonded. If your bite feels uneven, sensitivity lingers beyond a couple of weeks or the restoration feels rough, contact the office. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on a temporary restoration so it stays in place until the final piece is ready, and chew on the other side if you can.
Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and keep regular checkups so the dentist can examine the margins where the restoration meets the tooth. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect the restoration and the rest of your teeth from excess wear. With good care, these restorations can serve well for many years.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you have a large or broken filling, or a tooth that hurts when chewing. The dentist will assess it and explain the restoration options that suit that tooth.
Bring any X-rays or treatment plans from previous dentists, and ask about the number of visits that will be required.

An inlay fits inside the grooves between a tooth’s cusps, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps to protect them. The dentist chooses based on how much tooth is damaged and which parts need reinforcing to prevent cracks.
They are made outside the mouth and bonded in place, which can make them more durable for larger areas of damage. For small cavities, a direct filling is often perfectly adequate and simpler to place in a single visit.
An onlay can preserve more natural tooth than a crown when enough healthy structure remains around the damage. If damage is extensive or the tooth is very weak, a crown may be the safer recommendation, and the dentist will explain why.
With good care, inlays and onlays can last many years. Lifespan depends on the material, bite forces and home care. Regular checkups help identify wear or problems at the edges early, while they can still be repaired simply.
Some sensitivity is common for a few days to a couple of weeks. Contact the office if it is severe, worsening or still present after that period, so the dentist can check the restoration, the bite and the tooth underneath.
