Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations, usually of porcelain, composite or gold, that are bonded into or onto a back tooth. An inlay fits within the cusps, while an onlay covers one or more of them. They can be a good middle ground for teeth with moderate damage, preserving more natural structure than a full crown while offering strength beyond a large filling.
Patients from Vittoria with a large old filling, a broken cusp or moderate decay can ask about inlays and onlays at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine the tooth, explain whether one of these restorations is suitable and compare it with fillings and crowns so you understand the trade-offs before deciding.

When they suit
Inlays and onlays are often considered for back teeth with large fillings that need replacing, moderate decay or a single broken cusp. They can strengthen a tooth weakened by a large cavity while keeping healthy tooth structure that a crown would remove. They may also suit people who want a durable, tooth-coloured restoration on a molar.
If decay is very extensive, multiple cusps are cracked or the tooth has had root canal treatment, a crown may provide better protection. For small cavities, a direct filling is usually simpler. The dentist will explain why one option is recommended over another for your tooth, considering both strength and conservation. Ask to see the X-ray.
Material options
Porcelain and composite inlays and onlays can be colour-matched to your tooth. Porcelain is generally very stain-resistant and durable, while composite may be easier to repair. Both are bonded to the tooth, which can help reinforce it. The dentist will consider your bite and any grinding when recommending a tooth-coloured material. Both options blend in well.
Gold is highly durable, gentle on opposing teeth and has a long history of use in dentistry. It is visible, which some people do not mind on back teeth. Gold restorations may require slightly different preparation. Ask the dentist about the pros and cons of each material in your particular situation. Longevity varies by material.
The process
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed, decay or old filling material is removed and the tooth is shaped. An impression or digital scan is taken and sent to a laboratory, or the restoration may be designed in another way depending on the office’s process. A temporary filling protects the tooth while the restoration is made.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay is tried in to check fit, contacts and bite. Once it fits well, it is bonded or cemented in place and polished. Your bite is checked again. The tooth may feel slightly different at first, but this usually settles quickly. Report anything lasting.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure for a short time after placement is common. If the restoration feels high when you bite or sensitivity worsens, contact the office so the bite can be checked and adjusted. Avoid very hard or sticky foods on the temporary filling between appointments. If it falls out, call the office so the tooth can be protected again.
Brush and clean between teeth daily to prevent decay at the edges of the restoration. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect it. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the restoration and surrounding tooth for wear, gaps or new decay that could affect how long it lasts. Keep regular cleanings booked.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment of a tooth with a large filling or damage. Ask how many visits are involved so you can plan around the time between them.
Bring any X-rays or notes from previous dentists, and mention grinding, sensitivity or a history of broken fillings on that tooth.

An inlay fits within the grooves of a tooth between the cusps, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Both are custom-made and bonded into place. The dentist will recommend one based on the size and location of the damage.
For larger cavities, they can be stronger and more durable than direct fillings. For smaller cavities, a filling is usually sufficient. The dentist will explain which option suits your tooth based on the size of the repair.
Generally, yes. Onlays cover only the damaged parts of the tooth, while crowns cover the entire visible surface. This makes onlays more conservative when the remaining tooth is strong enough to support them. The dentist will explain the choice.
With good care, they can last for many years. Durability depends on material, bite forces, grinding and home care. The dentist can discuss expectations for your specific restoration and the factors that affect its lifespan.
Local anaesthetic is used during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually temporary. Contact the office if discomfort persists or the bite feels uneven. Adjustments are usually quick.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured material. Vittoria patients can learn when they suit, how they are placed and how to help them last longer.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to protect it and restore its shape. Vittoria patients can learn when crowns are advised, the steps and aftercare in Port Dover.
