Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaA middle-ground restoration
Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations, usually of ceramic or composite, that fit into or over a damaged back tooth. An inlay fits within the cusps, while an onlay extends over one or more of them. They are often considered when damage is too extensive for a regular filling but a full crown would remove more healthy tooth than necessary.
Villa Nova patients with a large cavity or broken filling can ask whether an inlay or onlay is suitable at our Port Dover office. This type of restoration often involves two visits, which is worth planning around.

When they fit
Inlays and onlays are commonly used for moderate to large cavities, replacing failing fillings or restoring teeth with a broken cusp. They are made outside the mouth and bonded in place, which can provide good strength and fit. The dentist will examine the tooth and may take X-rays to see how much healthy structure remains.
If the damage is small, a direct filling may be simpler. If the tooth is severely broken, cracked through or has had root canal treatment, a crown may offer better protection. Ask the dentist to compare options for your tooth and explain the reasons behind the recommendation.
Materials
Ceramic inlays and onlays can match natural tooth colour closely and resist staining. Composite options may be easier to repair if they chip. Gold is another durable option some patients choose for back teeth. The dentist will discuss which material suits the location and your preferences.
Bite forces, grinding habits and the size of the restoration all influence how well a material performs. Mention if you clench or grind, as this may affect the recommendation. Ask about expected durability and what maintenance may be needed over time.
The process
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed, decay or old filling material is removed, and the tooth is shaped. Impressions or scans are taken, and a temporary restoration protects the tooth while the inlay or onlay is made. Avoid sticky foods on that side until the final restoration is placed.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay is tried in for fit and appearance. Once satisfactory, it is bonded to the tooth. The bite is checked and adjusted. Let the dentist know if anything feels high or uncomfortable before you leave.
Looking after them
Some sensitivity is normal for a short time after bonding. If the bite feels uneven, sensitivity increases or pain develops, contact the office so the restoration can be checked. Chew carefully at first until you are comfortable with the new surface.
Brush and floss daily, paying attention to the margins where the restoration meets the tooth. Avoid using teeth to crack nuts or open packages. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the restoration and the surrounding tooth for any signs of wear or decay.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you have a large cavity, broken filling or damaged back tooth. The team can arrange an exam so the dentist can discuss restoration options.
Ask how long each appointment will take so you can plan travel between the preparation and bonding visits.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
An inlay fits within the cusps of a tooth, while an onlay covers one or more cusps. The choice depends on the area of damage.
An onlay can preserve more natural tooth. A crown may provide more protection for severely damaged or cracked teeth. The dentist will explain which suits your situation.
With good care, they can last many years. Longevity depends on the material, your bite and oral hygiene.
Local anaesthetic is usually used during preparation. The bonding visit may or may not require it, depending on sensitivity.
Small chips may sometimes be repaired, but larger damage may require replacement. Contact the office if you notice a problem.
Tooth-coloured composite can restore many cavities. Villa Nova patients can learn when it suits, what the appointment involves and how to care for it afterward.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to restore its shape and strength. Villa Nova patients can learn when crowns are advised, the visits involved and ongoing care.
