Inlays and onlays are custom restorations, usually made from porcelain, composite or gold, that repair back teeth with moderate to large damage. An inlay fits within the cusps of a tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. They are made outside the mouth and then bonded in place, offering strength without covering the entire tooth like a crown.
If you are in Vanessa and have a back tooth with a large old filling, a broken cusp or decay too extensive for a simple filling, the dentist at our Port Dover office can explain whether an inlay or onlay would be a good fit, and how it compares with a large filling or a full crown.

When they help
Inlays and onlays are often recommended when a back tooth has lost too much structure for a filling to be strong, but enough healthy tooth remains that a full crown would remove more than necessary. Replacing a large, failing filling or rebuilding a cracked cusp are common reasons. They can preserve more natural enamel than a crown in suitable cases.
If a tooth is severely broken, has very little healthy structure left, has had root canal treatment and needs full protection, or has cracks extending in several directions, a crown may be the safer option. The dentist will explain what they see on X-rays and in the mouth, and why one restoration is more suitable than another.
Material choices
Porcelain and composite inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured and can blend naturally with your teeth. Porcelain resists staining and is very durable when bonded properly, while composite is easier to repair if it chips. The dentist will match the shade to your surrounding teeth and explain how each material may wear over time in your bite.
Gold is a long-standing material with excellent durability and gentle wear on opposing teeth. It is less popular for visible areas because of its colour, but some people choose it for back teeth that take heavy biting forces. The dentist will compare costs and advantages, and you can decide based on your priorities for appearance and durability.
The procedure
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed, old filling material and decay are removed, and the tooth is shaped. An impression or digital scan is taken and sent to a dental lab, where the restoration is made. A temporary filling or onlay protects the tooth in the meantime; chew carefully on that side and avoid sticky foods.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay is tried in to check fit, contact with neighbouring teeth and bite. Once it is right, the tooth is cleaned and the restoration is bonded firmly in place. The dentist then adjusts the bite and polishes the surface smooth and comfortable against your tongue.
Making it last
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth every day, paying attention to the edges of the restoration where plaque can collect. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. If you grind or clench, ask whether a night guard would help protect your inlay or onlay and the surrounding teeth from heavy forces at night.
At regular checkups, the dentist examines the edges of the restoration, your bite and the surrounding tooth for any signs of wear, chipping or decay. Small issues can sometimes be repaired. If you notice sensitivity, a rough edge or pain when chewing, call the office rather than waiting for your next scheduled visit to raise it.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to have a damaged or heavily filled back tooth assessed. The dentist will explain whether an inlay, onlay, filling or crown is the best option and outline the appointments needed.
Mention any sensitivity, pain when chewing or past problems with the tooth, so the dentist can consider them during the assessment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
An inlay fits inside the cusps of a tooth, much like a filling, while an onlay covers one or more cusps. Both are custom-made outside the mouth and bonded in place, offering more strength than a large filling.
An onlay can preserve more natural tooth structure when the damage allows. A crown may be needed for teeth with extensive damage or after root canal treatment. The dentist will recommend the option that suits your tooth.
Many last for years with good care. Longevity depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and home care. Regular checkups help catch any wear, chipping or decay at the edges early, while a repair is still simple. Bonded porcelain and gold both tend to hold up well in suitable cases.
Some sensitivity for a few days is common, especially after removing a large old filling. It usually settles. If sensitivity is severe or lasts longer, or your bite feels high, call the office for a quick check.
Usually, because they are custom-made in a lab and require two visits. They may be more durable for larger repairs. Ask the office for an estimate, and check coverage directly with your insurance provider before booking.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured material. Vanessa patients can learn how they are placed, how long they last and how to care for them.
A crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Vanessa patients can learn when crowns are recommended, what the two visits involve and how to make one last.
