Caring for Renton patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for RentonBetween a filling and a crown
When decay or a broken old filling leaves a back tooth too damaged for a regular filling but still largely sound, an inlay or onlay may be a good fit. These restorations are made outside the mouth, often from ceramic or gold, then bonded or cemented into place. An inlay fills the area between the cusps, while an onlay also covers one or more cusps.
For Renton patients, discussing these options happens during an exam at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why an inlay or onlay might be preferred over a large filling or a full crown for a particular tooth, what materials are available and how the usual two-step process works from preparation to final placement.

When they are suggested
Teeth with large cavities, failing old fillings or small fractures that weaken a cusp are common candidates. An onlay can strengthen a tooth by covering weak cusps without removing as much structure as a crown. The dentist will look at how much healthy tooth remains, the location of the damage and your bite before making a recommendation for that tooth.
A large direct filling can usually be completed in one visit, but it can be less durable for extensive damage. A crown provides full coverage but requires removing more tooth. Inlays and onlays offer a middle path. Ask the dentist to compare the options for your tooth, including expected durability and the number of visits involved.
Materials
Ceramic inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured and can be matched closely to surrounding enamel. They are bonded to the tooth, which can help strengthen it. Ceramic is resistant to staining and can be very durable under normal chewing forces, though, like natural teeth, it can chip under heavy grinding or if used to bite very hard objects.
Gold is highly durable and gentle on opposing teeth, making it a good choice for some molars, though its colour is visible. Laboratory-made composite is another option, which can be easier to repair but is more prone to wear and staining over time. The dentist will discuss which material suits the tooth’s location, your bite and your preferences.
Treatment visits
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed, decay or old filling material is removed and the tooth is shaped. Impressions or a digital scan capture the preparation, and a temporary restoration is placed. Be gentle with the temporary, avoid sticky foods and clean carefully around it. Call the office if it comes loose before your next appointment.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed, and the inlay or onlay is tried in. The dentist checks the fit, contact with neighbouring teeth and your bite. Once satisfactory, it is bonded or cemented. Final adjustments and polishing complete the process. Renton patients can schedule both visits together to plan travel and time away from work or farm duties.
Long-term care
Some sensitivity after placement is common and usually fades within a few weeks. If the bite feels high or sensitivity worsens rather than improves, contact the office. A small adjustment may be all that is needed. Chew gently on the treated side for the first day or two while the tooth and surrounding tissues settle.
Brush twice daily and clean between teeth to prevent decay at the edges of the restoration. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the restoration and catch any issues, such as wear or marginal leakage, before they become bigger problems.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 to book an exam if a back tooth has a large filling, a crack or new sensitivity. The dentist will explain whether an inlay, onlay or another option makes sense.
Ask about scheduling both appointments together, and mention any grinding habits, since they can influence material choice and design for the tooth.

An inlay fits within the grooves between a tooth’s cusps, much like a filling. An onlay extends over one or more cusps to protect weak areas. Both are made outside the mouth and then bonded or cemented into place.
For larger cavities, they can be more durable and better at supporting the tooth than a large direct filling. For small cavities, a regular filling is often appropriate. The dentist will recommend based on the size and location of the damage.
With good care, many last for years, often longer than large direct fillings. Longevity depends on material, bite forces, grinding habits and home care. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor their condition and spot any concerns early.
Usually, yes. A temporary restoration protects the prepared tooth between visits. Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side and call the office if it falls out, so the tooth can be protected until the final restoration is placed.
Sometimes. An onlay can preserve more natural tooth than a crown when damage is limited to certain areas. If the tooth is extensively damaged or has had a root canal, a crown may be more appropriate. The dentist will explain the reasoning.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured resin bonded in layers. Renton patients can learn when they suit a cavity and how to care for them.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by decay, fracture or a large filling. Renton residents can see how crowns are planned and placed.
