Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseThe middle ground
When a back tooth has lost too much structure for a standard filling to hold up well, but enough remains that a full crown seems excessive, an inlay or onlay may be suggested. These restorations are made to fit precisely, usually in a dental lab, and bonded into place to strengthen the tooth while preserving healthy enamel.
Patients from Port Ryerse can discuss whether an inlay or onlay suits a damaged tooth at our Port Dover office. The dentist will compare it with a filling or crown, explaining the trade-offs in durability, tooth preservation and number of visits.

What they are
An inlay fits within the grooves and between the cusps of a back tooth, much like a filling but made outside the mouth for a precise fit. It is useful when decay or an old filling has left a moderate cavity in the centre of the chewing surface.
An onlay extends over one or more cusps, the raised points of the tooth, providing more protection. It is sometimes called a partial crown. Onlays are useful when cusps are cracked or weakened but the rest of the tooth is sound, allowing more natural tooth to be kept than with a crown.
Choosing this option
Inlays and onlays are durable and can strengthen teeth by bonding to them. They preserve more tooth structure than crowns. Ceramic versions match tooth colour well and resist staining. Their precise fit helps seal the tooth, which can reduce the risk of leakage and decay at the edges.
They usually require two appointments and lab work, unless made with in-office technology where available. Costs are often higher than direct fillings. The dentist will explain whether the additional durability justifies the investment for your particular tooth and bite.
The process
The tooth is numbed and old filling material or decay is removed. The dentist shapes the cavity and takes an impression or scan, which is sent to a lab. A temporary filling protects the tooth in the meantime. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on that side until the final restoration is placed.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay is tried in to check fit, contacts and colour. It is then bonded into place and polished. Your bite is carefully adjusted. Let the office know if the tooth feels high or sensitive after the numbness wears off.
Long-term care
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily. Decay can still develop at the edges where the restoration meets the tooth. Regular checkups and X-rays allow the dentist to monitor the margins and catch problems early.
Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. If you grind or clench, ask whether a night guard would help protect your restorations. Report any chipping, roughness, sensitivity or a feeling that something is loose so it can be assessed promptly.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment of the tooth. If another dentist has suggested a crown or large filling, bring that plan so options can be compared.
Allow for two appointments, and ask about the time needed for lab fabrication between visits.

For moderately sized cavities, they can be more durable and better fitting than large direct fillings. For small cavities, a regular filling is usually sufficient. The dentist will advise based on your tooth.
An onlay preserves more natural tooth than a crown, which requires reshaping all sides. If enough healthy structure remains, an onlay may be a more conservative option.
Ceramic, composite resin and gold are common. Ceramic offers a natural appearance, gold is very durable and composite may be less costly. The dentist will explain the options for your tooth.
With good care, they can last many years. Longevity depends on material, bite forces and hygiene. Regular checkups help identify wear or decay around the edges early.
Some short-term sensitivity is possible, especially to cold. It usually settles within days or weeks. Persistent or worsening discomfort should be reported to the office.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured resin. Port Ryerse patients can learn when they suit, how they are placed and how long they last in Port Dover.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to restore strength and shape. Port Ryerse patients can learn when a crown makes sense and what the visits involve in Port Dover.
