Port Dover Family Dentistry
Less coverage is not always enough for a weakened tooth. Consider the balance between preserving structure and supporting a repair in our Port Rowan onlay guide.

All dental services for Port RowanConsider how much of the tooth needs rebuilding
When a tooth has more damage than a straightforward filling can reasonably address, a full crown is not the only option that may be discussed. An inlay or onlay restores a defined portion of a suitable tooth. The choice depends on which areas remain sound and which parts need additional protection or rebuilding.
Port Rowan patients can ask our Port Dover team about these options during a restorative assessment. Bring questions about a large old filling, a missing cusp or a recommendation you have received. The dentist can explain whether a partial restoration fits the findings and how it compares with other clinically suitable approaches.

Understand the terms
An inlay generally fits within the biting surface between the cusps, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps when that coverage is needed. Ask the dentist to point out the area being restored in your tooth. The name is useful only when it helps you understand the problem the restoration is meant to address.
Ask why the amount of healthy structure, position of the defect and possible fit favour the proposed design. Inlays and onlays are not interchangeable with every filling or crown. Also discuss findings that could change the recommendation during preparation, so you understand how a decision would be revisited if the condition of the remaining tooth differs from what was first expected.
Review the remaining structure
The clinician examines existing dental work, decay, cracks and the way the tooth contacts its neighbours and opposing teeth. Symptoms such as pain on release after biting or sensitivity deserve discussion. Additional tests or imaging may be recommended to understand the condition before selecting the extent of the restoration.
Ask the dentist to identify any weakened cusp that may need coverage as well as sound structure that can be retained. Filling the space beside a weakened area and covering that area address different needs. Comparing those findings with a direct filling or full crown makes the reason for partial coverage clearer than choosing solely by the apparent size of a restoration.
Follow the preparation and fitting plan
The team can describe preparation, records used to make the restoration and the fitting arrangements for the approach proposed. Materials and production methods vary, so ask about the actual plan for your tooth. Discuss appearance, function and the estimate together, including any treatment required before the restoration is made.
When a temporary restoration is part of the sequence, ask how to care for it and whom to contact if it loosens, breaks or the tooth feels different. Confirm which visit is intended to complete the restoration before planning your journeys from Port Rowan. Report changed symptoms so the team can discuss whether review is needed before that planned fitting appointment.
Maintain the edges and contacts
After placement, ask how to clean the restored tooth and the contact areas on either side. Tell the clinician if floss catches or chewing feels uneven. The fit and bite need to function in everyday use, and persistent discomfort should be reviewed instead of managed by repeatedly avoiding that tooth.
Continue examinations of the repair and remaining natural tooth, and discuss grinding or clenching that may add to its biting demands. Wear, fractures and new decay remain possible over time. Ask how the retained areas and restoration edges will be monitored, so preserving tooth structure through partial coverage is followed by appropriate care of that structure.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office with the reason you are considering an inlay or onlay, including a recent break or an earlier recommendation. Mention discomfort and any temporary dental work already in place.
At the assessment, ask which surfaces need restoration and how alternatives differ in preparation and follow-up. Confirm the likely appointment sequence before arranging travel, especially when laboratory or temporary stages form part of the proposed treatment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
An onlay covers selected parts of a tooth, including one or more cusps, while a crown provides more extensive coverage of the prepared tooth. The appropriate design depends on the condition found. Ask why the recommended amount of coverage suits your tooth.
The dentist must assess the defect and remaining structure before deciding whether that approach is suitable. An old filling's age alone does not establish a need for replacement. Ask what problem is being addressed and which options are reasonable.
Preserving healthy structure is a consideration, but the restoration also needs to protect weakened areas and function under your bite. A smaller restoration is not automatically adequate for every tooth. Discuss the structural reasons behind the recommended design.
Ask beforehand about findings that could alter the plan and how those decisions would be discussed with you. The amount of sound tooth may become clearer during treatment. Changes to the proposed restoration, sequence or estimate should be explained.
Follow the cleaning and eating instructions provided for your restoration, and keep the recommended review appointments. Report roughness, food trapping or a change in bite. The surrounding natural tooth and the restoration's margins need ongoing care even when chewing feels normal.
Replacing a filling for colour can involve more tooth preparation. Weigh that consequence alongside appearance in our Port Rowan guide to composite restorations.
A crown estimate may involve preliminary work to build a suitable foundation. Our Port Rowan guide helps you ask what must happen before the final restoration.
