An inlay fits within the grooves of a back tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more of the cusps. Both are made outside the mouth, usually from ceramic, composite or gold, and then bonded or cemented in place. They are often chosen when damage is too extensive for a regular filling but a full crown would remove more healthy tooth than necessary.
Pine Grove patients can have a damaged back tooth assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether an inlay, onlay, filling or crown best suits the amount of tooth remaining.

When they help
Large cavities, broken cusps, cracked teeth with limited extent and the replacement of big old fillings are common reasons for inlays or onlays. Because they are made in a lab or milled precisely, they often have strong, well-sealed margins. Preserving natural tooth structure can benefit the long-term health of the tooth.
If very little tooth remains, if a crack extends deeply, or if a back tooth has had root canal treatment and needs full coverage, a crown may provide better protection. Ask the dentist to explain why one option is preferred, including how each affects the remaining tooth and how long it is likely to last.
Materials
Ceramic and composite inlays and onlays can be matched to your tooth shade for a natural appearance. Ceramic is very stain-resistant and durable when bonded properly. Composite may be easier to repair. The dentist will consider your bite, any grinding habits and the tooth’s position when recommending a material.
Gold is long-lasting, gentle on opposing teeth and requires less tooth reduction, though its colour makes it more noticeable. Some people prefer it for back teeth where appearance matters less. Discuss your priorities, whether appearance, longevity or tooth preservation, so the material choice matches your expectations.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed and old filling material or decay is removed. The dentist shapes the cavity so the restoration will fit precisely, then takes impressions or a digital scan. A temporary filling protects the tooth while the inlay or onlay is made. Avoid sticky foods on that side until your next visit.
At the second appointment, the temporary is removed and the final restoration is tried in. The dentist checks the fit, contacts with neighbouring teeth and your bite before bonding or cementing it in place. Excess material is cleaned away and the surface is polished. Tell the dentist if the bite feels uneven.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to cold or pressure is common for a short time after placement. It should gradually ease. If the bite feels high, chewing hurts or sensitivity persists beyond a couple of weeks, call the office. A small adjustment often helps, and lingering pain may need further evaluation of the nerve.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth every day, as decay can still form at the edges. Avoid chewing ice or very hard foods. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the restoration and catch issues early.
Planning your appointment
Book an examination at our Port Dover office if you have a large or broken filling, or a damaged back tooth. The dentist will explain which restoration is suitable.
Bring any X-rays or treatment plans from another dentist. Allow time for freezing at the preparation visit and eat a light meal beforehand.

Fillings are placed and shaped directly in the mouth, while inlays are made outside the mouth to fit precisely and then bonded in place. Inlays can offer strong margins and durability for larger repairs.
An onlay preserves more natural tooth because it covers only the damaged cusps. A crown covers the whole tooth. Which is better depends on how much healthy structure remains and the forces on that tooth.
With good care, they often last many years. Longevity depends on material, bite forces and home care. Regular checkups help identify wear or leakage early so they can be addressed promptly.
Mild sensitivity is common for a short time. If it persists, increases or the bite feels uneven, contact the office. The dentist can adjust the restoration or evaluate the tooth further.
Yes, they are often used to replace large old fillings, especially when the tooth needs extra support. The dentist will check the tooth after removing the old filling to confirm the best restoration.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured material. Pine Grove patients can read how the filling is placed, how long it lasts and how to care for it.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to restore strength and shape. Pine Grove patients can see when crowns are advised, which materials exist and how fitting works.
