Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations, usually of ceramic, composite or gold, that are bonded into or onto a tooth. An inlay fits within the cusps of a back tooth, while an onlay covers one or more cusps. They can repair moderate to large damage while preserving more natural tooth structure than a full crown would require.
If you are a Peacock Point patient with a damaged back tooth, you can find out at our Port Dover office whether an inlay or onlay suits it. Because these restorations usually involve two appointments, plan your visits within your time in the area.

Is it right?
These restorations are often recommended when a cavity or old filling is too large for a direct filling to be strong enough, but enough healthy tooth remains that a crown is not necessary. They may also be used to reinforce a cracked cusp. The dentist will assess the size of the damage, your bite and the condition of surrounding walls.
If the tooth is very weak, has had root canal treatment or has extensive cracks, a crown may provide better protection. Small cavities are often best treated with a direct filling. Ask the dentist to explain why an inlay or onlay is suggested over these alternatives and what the expected durability is for your tooth.
Materials
Ceramic inlays and onlays can be colour-matched to your teeth and resist staining well. Composite versions are also tooth-coloured and may be easier to repair, though they can wear faster. Both are bonded to the tooth, which can help strengthen remaining structure. The dentist will recommend a material based on location, bite and appearance.
Gold is highly durable, gentle on opposing teeth and requires minimal tooth removal, but it is visible. Some patients choose gold for back teeth where appearance is less of a concern. Ask about the pros and cons of each option, including how they wear over time and how they may affect neighbouring teeth.
The process
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed and decay or old filling material is removed. The dentist shapes the tooth to receive the restoration and takes impressions or a digital scan. A temporary filling protects the tooth while the inlay or onlay is made. Avoid sticky or hard foods on the temporary.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the restoration is tried in. The dentist checks fit, contacts with neighbouring teeth and bite, then bonds or cements it in place. Excess material is removed and the surface polished. You may notice mild sensitivity for a short time afterward, which usually settles.
Care
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth carefully, since decay can form at the edges of any restoration. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. If you grind or clench your teeth, ask about a night guard to reduce stress on the restoration and surrounding tooth structure.
Regular examinations allow the dentist to check the edges, bite and surrounding tooth. Report any sensitivity, roughness or a feeling that the restoration has shifted. Early attention to small problems can prevent larger repairs. Well-maintained inlays and onlays can serve for many years.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to book an examination for a damaged back tooth. Mention any old fillings causing concern so the dentist can assess whether an inlay or onlay is suitable.
Bring records of previous dental work on the tooth and let the team know about any grinding or clenching habits.

An inlay fits within the grooves between the cusps of a tooth. An onlay extends over one or more cusps to cover and protect a larger area. The dentist chooses based on the extent and location of the damage.
For larger cavities, they can be stronger and more durable than direct fillings. For small cavities, a direct filling is usually sufficient. The dentist will recommend the option that best suits the damage.
Inlays and onlays preserve more natural tooth structure than crowns. If enough healthy tooth remains, they can provide adequate strength without removing as much enamel. A crown may be better for very weak teeth.
Local anaesthetic is used during preparation, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles. Contact the office if discomfort persists.
With good care, they can last many years. Longevity depends on the material, your bite and oral hygiene. Regular checkups help identify wear or problems early so they can be addressed.
A cavity or small fracture may be restored with composite. Peacock Point patients can learn how these tooth-coloured fillings are placed at our Port Dover office.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by decay, cracks or root canal care. Peacock Point patients can review crown options at our Port Dover dental office.
