Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that fit into or over the biting surface of a back tooth. An inlay sits within the grooves between the cusps, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. They are often used when damage is too large for a standard filling but a full crown would remove more healthy tooth than necessary.
If you live in Nixon and have a large old filling or a tooth with moderate damage, ask about inlays and onlays at our Port Dover office. The dentist will compare them with fillings and crowns and explain which option best balances strength, appearance and preservation of your natural tooth.

When they fit
An inlay or onlay may be suggested when a large filling has broken down, a cusp has cracked or decay has removed too much tooth for a direct filling to be strong. Because the restoration is made outside the mouth, it can be shaped precisely and made from durable materials. It can strengthen the tooth while keeping more of its natural structure intact.
If damage is very extensive, involves much of the tooth or follows root canal treatment, a crown may provide better protection. For smaller cavities, a regular filling may be enough. The dentist will explain the reasons for recommending one option over another, including how much tooth each would remove and how they compare in durability.
Preparing the tooth
After freezing the area, the dentist removes decay and any old filling material, then shapes the tooth to receive the restoration. The aim is to remove only what is needed. The dentist will explain the process, and you can ask for a pause at any time. Some sensitivity or pressure is normal, but sharp pain should be mentioned right away.
Impressions or scans capture the prepared tooth and your bite. A temporary filling protects the tooth while the inlay or onlay is made. Avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on that side, and contact the office if the temporary comes loose or the tooth becomes very sensitive before your next appointment. A loose temporary can let the tooth shift slightly.
Bonding it in
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the restoration is tried in. The dentist checks how it fits the tooth, contacts neighbouring teeth and meets your bite. Small adjustments may be made. If the colour or shape looks wrong, mention it before the restoration is bonded, since changes are much harder once it is secured.
The restoration is bonded to the tooth with a strong adhesive, then polished. Your bite is checked again to make sure it feels even. Some people notice mild sensitivity for a short time afterward. If your bite feels high or sensitivity continues, contact the office so the dentist can check and adjust the restoration promptly.
Making it last
Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and keep regular checkups. Decay can develop at the edges where the restoration meets the tooth, so careful cleaning matters. The hygienist can show you how to clean these areas effectively. Regular examinations allow the dentist to spot early problems around the margins before they grow and need more extensive repair.
Avoid chewing ice, hard candies or using teeth as tools, which can chip or crack restorations. If you grind or clench, a night guard may help protect them. Report chips, rough edges or new sensitivity promptly. With care, inlays and onlays can serve well for many years, though no restoration lasts forever and periodic review is wise.
Planning your appointment
Book an assessment at our Port Dover office if you have a large or failing filling or a damaged back tooth. Ask how inlays and onlays compare with fillings and crowns for your situation.
Ask how many appointments are needed, since most inlays and onlays involve two visits, and plan your trips from Nixon accordingly.

An inlay fits within the grooves of the biting surface, between the cusps. An onlay covers one or more cusps as well. The choice depends on where the damage is and how much of the tooth needs reinforcement.
They can be stronger and more durable for larger areas of damage, since they are custom made. For small cavities, a regular filling is often sufficient. The dentist will recommend the option that suits your tooth.
They can preserve more natural tooth than a crown when damage is moderate. For extensive damage or after root canal treatment, a crown may offer better protection. The dentist will explain the reasoning for your specific tooth.
Tooth-coloured materials can be shaded to blend with your natural teeth. The dentist will discuss material options and appearance with you before the restoration is made, so you know what to expect when it is fitted.
Many last for years with good care, but lifespan depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and hygiene. Regular checkups help monitor their condition and catch problems early, especially at the edges where decay can begin.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured material. Nixon patients can see how cavities are found, what the visit involves and how to care for it.
A crown covers and strengthens a weakened tooth. Nixon patients can learn when crowns are advised, how the two-visit process works and how to keep one lasting.
