Port Dover Family Dentistry
Some back teeth need more than a filling but less than a crown. Nanticoke patients can see how damage and material choice shape an inlay or onlay plan.

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations, usually ceramic, composite or gold, crafted outside the mouth and bonded into place. An inlay fits within the cusps of a back tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. They can strengthen teeth with moderate damage while preserving more natural structure than a full crown would require.
When a back tooth in a Nanticoke patient has a large cavity, a broken cusp or an old filling that needs replacing, the dentist at our Port Dover office can explain whether an inlay or onlay is suitable and how it compares with other restorations.

When they fit
Inlays and onlays are often considered when decay or fracture is too large for a direct filling to be durable, but enough healthy tooth remains that a full crown is not necessary. They are commonly used on molars and premolars. Replacing a large, failing old filling is another frequent reason for choosing one of these restorations.
A direct filling is placed in one visit but may not reinforce a weakened tooth as well. A crown covers the whole tooth but requires more reduction. An onlay sits between the two. Ask the dentist why they suggest this option for your tooth, and what the trade-offs in durability, appearance and tooth preservation are.
Materials
Ceramic and composite inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured and bonded to the tooth, which can help reinforce remaining structure. Ceramic resists staining and wear well, while composite may be easier to repair. The dentist will consider your bite, the location of the tooth and your preferences when recommending a material for the restoration.
Gold is very durable, gentle on opposing teeth and can be made with thin margins, but its colour makes it less common today. Some people still choose it for back teeth where appearance is less important. Ask about the expected lifespan and maintenance of each material so you can make an informed decision.
The process
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed, old filling material or decay is removed and the tooth is shaped. Impressions or a digital scan are taken and a shade is selected if a tooth-coloured material is used. A temporary restoration protects the tooth while the inlay or onlay is being made, so be gentle with it.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed, the inlay or onlay is tried in and checked for fit and bite, then bonded or cemented in place. Final adjustments are made and the surface is polished. Some sensitivity afterward is possible. Report a bite that feels high or discomfort that does not settle.
Care
Brush twice daily and clean between teeth carefully, especially around the margins of the restoration, where decay can start. Regular cleanings and checkups allow the dentist to inspect the edges and catch early problems. Limit frequent sugary or acidic snacks to protect both the restoration and the surrounding natural tooth.
Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or using teeth to open packages, which can crack restorations or the tooth around them. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard. Contact the office if you notice a rough edge, sensitivity, a gap or a change in how your bite feels.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to discuss an inlay or onlay. Mention which tooth is affected and whether you have any pain, sensitivity or a broken piece so the team can plan appropriately.
Plan for two appointments in most cases, and bring any recent X-rays or treatment recommendations from another dentist.

An inlay fits within the cusps of a back tooth, similar to a filling. An onlay extends over one or more cusps to protect them. The dentist will recommend one based on how much of the tooth is damaged.
They are made outside the mouth and can be very durable, often reinforcing a weakened tooth better than a large direct filling. Longevity depends on the material, your bite and how well the tooth is cared for.
An onlay can preserve more natural tooth structure than a crown when enough healthy tooth remains. If the tooth is very weak or cracked, a crown may be more suitable. The dentist can explain which option fits your tooth.
Ceramic and composite options are shaded to blend with your natural tooth. Gold is visibly different in colour. The dentist will discuss material choices and appearance before the restoration is made.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so the procedure is generally comfortable. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles. Report any lasting discomfort or bite issues to the office.
Composite fillings repair decay with a tooth-coloured material bonded to the tooth. See how Nanticoke patients are assessed and treated in Port Dover.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to protect and restore it. Nanticoke patients can learn when crowns are suggested and how they are made in Port Dover.
