Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsBetween filling and crown
Inlays and onlays are restorations made outside the mouth, usually from ceramic, composite or gold, and then bonded into place. An inlay fits within the cusps of a back tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. They are often considered when damage is too large for a standard filling but a full crown would remove more healthy tooth than necessary.
Patients from Lynedoch with a large old filling, a cracked cusp or moderate decay can ask about inlays and onlays during a visit to our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether this approach fits the tooth and how it compares with a filling or crown.

When they fit
An inlay may be suitable when decay or an old filling sits within the centre of a back tooth and the outer walls remain strong. Because it is made to fit precisely, an inlay can provide a durable, well-sealed restoration. The dentist evaluates the remaining tooth structure before recommending it.
When one or more cusps are weakened or broken, an onlay can cover and protect them. It preserves more natural tooth than a crown, which wraps the entire tooth. Ask the dentist to show you the weak areas and explain why partial coverage is preferred over a full crown.
Materials
Ceramic and composite inlays and onlays can be shaded to match natural teeth, making them a popular choice for visible areas. Ceramic is resistant to staining and wear. The dentist will consider bite forces, grinding habits and the thickness of material needed when recommending a tooth-coloured option.
Gold is highly durable and gentle on opposing teeth, though it is more noticeable. It can be a good choice for patients with heavy bites. Ask about the pros and cons of each material for your tooth, including appearance, longevity and how each may affect the opposing tooth over time.
The process
At the first visit, freezing is given, decay or old filling material is removed and the tooth is shaped. Impressions or a scan are taken to create the restoration. A temporary filling protects the tooth until the next appointment. Avoid sticky foods and call if the temporary comes out.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay checked for fit, contact with neighbouring teeth and bite. Once everything looks right, it is bonded into place and polished. Mention any rough spots or high areas before you leave so they can be adjusted.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to temperature or chewing is common for a short time. If your bite feels uneven or discomfort increases rather than fades, contact the office. A properly adjusted restoration should feel comfortable and natural within a few days of placement.
Brush and floss daily, paying attention to the edges where the restoration meets the tooth. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. If you grind, ask whether a night guard would help. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the margins and catch any wear or decay early.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office if a large filling has failed or a back tooth has chipped. The dentist can assess whether an inlay, onlay or another restoration suits the tooth.
Ask how far apart the two appointments usually are so you can plan your travel from Lynedoch.

An onlay covers part of the tooth, including one or more cusps, while a crown covers the entire visible tooth. Onlays preserve more natural tooth structure when the damage allows it.
Inlays are made outside the mouth and fitted precisely, which can make them durable for larger repairs. The best choice depends on the size of the damage and your bite.
Usually freezing is used during preparation. The bonding visit may not always need it. The dentist will discuss comfort options before treatment begins.
With good care, inlays and onlays can last many years. Lifespan depends on the material, your bite, habits and home care. Regular checkups help monitor them.
Often yes, if the filling is failing or the tooth needs more support. The dentist will evaluate the tooth and explain whether an inlay, onlay or crown is most suitable.
Tooth-coloured composite fillings can repair decay and small fractures. Lynedoch patients can learn about the procedure, sensitivity and aftercare at our Port Dover office.
A crown covers a weakened, cracked or root-treated tooth to help it function again. Lynedoch patients can learn about materials and visits at our Port Dover office.
