Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations, usually of ceramic, composite or gold, that are fabricated outside the mouth and bonded into place. An inlay fits within the cusps of a tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. They are often recommended when a cavity or old filling is too large for a direct filling but enough healthy tooth remains.
For Langton patients, the dentist at our Port Dover office will examine the tooth, check its cusps and bite and explain whether an inlay, onlay, filling or crown offers the best balance of strength and conservation. Because these restorations are made in a laboratory, treatment usually involves two visits.

When they fit
A back tooth with a large cavity, a broken old filling or a cracked cusp may need more support than a standard filling can offer. If the surrounding walls are still strong, an inlay or onlay can restore the tooth while preserving healthy enamel. The dentist will assess how much structure remains and how the tooth handles chewing forces before recommending one.
Fillings are placed directly and are suitable for small to moderate damage. Crowns cover the whole tooth and are used when structure is very weak. Inlays and onlays sit between these, offering durability with less tooth removal than a crown. Ask the dentist to explain the trade-offs for your tooth, including strength, appearance and expected lifespan.
Materials
Ceramic inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured, resist staining and bond well to enamel. Composite versions are also tooth-coloured and may be easier to repair, though they can wear faster. The dentist considers your bite, grinding habits and the location of the tooth when suggesting a material, and will match the shade to blend with the teeth around it.
Gold has a long track record of durability and is gentle on opposing teeth. It requires less tooth reduction in some situations but is visible when you open your mouth. Some patients choose gold for back teeth where appearance matters less and strength is important. Ask the dentist about the pros and cons of each material for your situation.
The process
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed and the decay or old filling is removed. The dentist shapes the tooth and takes an impression or digital scan. A temporary filling protects the tooth while the laboratory makes the final restoration. Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side, and call if the temporary feels loose or falls out.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay is tried in to check fit, contacts and colour. It is then bonded or cemented into place and polished. The dentist adjusts the bite so it feels natural. Let them know if anything feels high, as small adjustments prevent soreness and protect the new restoration.
Aftercare
Mild sensitivity to temperature or biting is common for a short time and usually fades. If sensitivity is severe or does not improve after a couple of weeks, contact the office. The tooth may also feel slightly different under your tongue at first. If your bite feels uneven after the anaesthetic wears off, call so it can be adjusted.
Brush twice daily, floss every day and keep regular checkups so the dentist can examine the edges of the restoration. Decay can still form where the restoration meets the tooth. If you grind, ask about a night guard to protect both the restoration and your natural teeth. Avoid chewing ice and other very hard objects.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office if you have a large cavity, a broken filling or a cracked back tooth. The dentist can explain whether an inlay, onlay or another restoration is the right choice for that tooth.
Ask about the two-visit process when booking so both appointments can be planned around your work schedule and travel from home.
Before you book

An onlay covers part of the tooth, usually one or more cusps, while a crown covers the entire visible tooth. Onlays preserve more natural structure when enough healthy tooth remains. The dentist will recommend the option that best protects your tooth.
Because they are fabricated in a laboratory from durable materials, inlays and onlays are often stronger and more wear-resistant than large direct fillings. They can also reinforce weakened cusps, which helps protect the tooth from cracking.
With good care, they often last many years. Longevity depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and oral hygiene. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the edges and catch any problems early, while repair is simpler.
Usually, yes, for the preparation visit when decay or old filling material is removed. The second visit may or may not require anaesthetic, depending on the tooth’s sensitivity. The dentist will discuss what to expect beforehand.
Coverage varies widely between plans. Ask your insurer about benefits for inlays and onlays, and ask the office how coverage questions are handled before treatment. The team can provide treatment details you may need for your plan.
Composite fillings repair cavities with material shaded to match your teeth. Langton patients can learn when they suit and what the visit involves.
A crown covers a damaged or weakened tooth to restore strength and shape. Langton patients can learn when crowns are advised and what the visits involve.
