Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that fit into or over part of a tooth. An inlay sits within the cusps of a back tooth, while an onlay covers one or more cusps. They are often used when a cavity or old filling is too large for a direct filling but enough healthy tooth remains to avoid a full crown.
Patients travelling from Cultus can discuss inlays and onlays at our Port Dover office. The dentist will assess how much tooth remains, how you bite and which restoration is likely to last, and explain how the process differs from a standard filling, including the extra visit involved.

When they help
When decay or a broken filling leaves a large gap in a back tooth, a direct filling may not be strong enough. An inlay or onlay can restore shape and strength. They are also used when cusps are cracked or weakened. The dentist will show you why a laboratory-made restoration may be preferred in your situation.
Because an inlay or onlay replaces only the damaged part, it usually requires removing less healthy tooth than a crown. This can be an advantage for long-term tooth health. However, not every tooth is suitable. Ask the dentist to explain how much structure remains and how it affects your options. An X-ray can help show this.
Materials
Ceramic and composite inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured and bonded to the tooth, which can help strengthen it. Ceramics resist staining and wear well. Composite may be easier to repair. The dentist will suggest a material based on the location of the tooth, the forces it takes and your preferences. Grinding is worth mentioning too.
Gold has long been used for inlays and onlays because it is durable and gentle on opposing teeth. It is more visible, so some people prefer it only for back teeth. Ask the dentist about the advantages and limitations of each material for your particular tooth and bite pattern. Each has a long track record when well placed.
The process
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed and decay or old filling material is removed. The dentist shapes the tooth and takes impressions or a digital scan. A temporary restoration protects the tooth while the laboratory makes your inlay or onlay. Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side in the meantime. Call if it loosens.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the new restoration is tried in. The dentist checks the fit, colour and bite before bonding or cementing it. Final polishing and bite adjustments help it feel natural. Tell the dentist if anything feels high when you bite, even slightly. A high spot that seems minor in the chair can feel much more noticeable once you start chewing normally.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to cold or pressure is common after placement and usually fades. If the bite feels uneven or sensitivity worsens, contact the office. The dentist may make a small adjustment. A properly fitted inlay or onlay should soon feel like a natural part of your bite. Floss around it as you would any tooth, paying attention to the edges where the restoration meets enamel.
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep up with regular checkups so the dentist can monitor the edges for decay or wear. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect the restoration. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects that could crack the material. Well-maintained restorations of this kind can serve for many years.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss a tooth with a large filling or damage. The team can arrange an exam to see whether an inlay, onlay or another restoration suits it.
Ask how long each appointment is likely to take and how much time passes between the two visits so you can plan your trips.

An inlay fits within the cusps of a tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Both are custom-made and used for teeth that need more than a filling but not full coverage.
They can preserve more natural tooth structure, which is often an advantage. However, crowns may be needed when damage is extensive. The dentist will recommend what suits your tooth and explain the reasons behind it.
With good care, they can last many years. Lifespan depends on material, bite forces and oral hygiene. Regular checkups help detect wear or decay at the edges while repair is still simple, quick and comfortable.
Tooth-coloured ceramic and composite options are designed to blend with your natural teeth. Gold is more noticeable but very durable. Discuss appearance with the dentist, especially for teeth that show when you laugh or smile widely.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel little discomfort. Some sensitivity afterward is common and typically settles within days or weeks. Call if it lingers, gets worse or the bite feels off.
Composite fillings repair decay with a tooth-coloured material. Cultus patients can learn how the dentist decides on a filling and how to care for it afterward.
A dental crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Cultus patients can learn when crowns are advised, how many visits they take and how to care for one.
