Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair back teeth with moderate damage. An inlay fits within the grooves of the chewing surface, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. They are often made of ceramic or composite in a laboratory and bonded to the tooth, preserving more natural structure than a full crown.
Brantford patients whose teeth have large old fillings or moderate decay can ask about inlays and onlays at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether this approach suits the tooth, how it compares with fillings and crowns and how the two visits typically work.

Is it the right fit?
These restorations suit teeth with damage too extensive for a filling but where enough healthy structure remains to avoid a crown. Replacing large old fillings, repairing broken cusps and restoring moderate decay are common uses. Preserving more tooth structure can be an advantage for long-term tooth health.
Very small cavities may be better treated with a direct filling. Teeth with cracks extending deeply, extensive decay or root canal treatment may need a crown for full coverage and protection. The dentist will explain the reasoning behind each recommendation and the trade-offs between approaches.
Materials
Ceramic inlays and onlays can closely match natural tooth colour and resist staining. Composite versions may be less costly but can wear more over time. Both are bonded to the tooth, which can help strengthen it. The dentist considers your bite forces and appearance preferences when recommending a material.
Gold is very durable and gentle on opposing teeth, making it suitable for heavy biting areas. It is visible, which some people do not mind on back teeth. Discuss whether durability or appearance is more important to you, as this helps the dentist recommend a material that suits your needs.
The appointments
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed, old filling material or decay is removed, and the tooth is shaped. Impressions or scans are taken, and a temporary restoration is placed. Avoid sticky or hard foods on the temporary. Ask how long the laboratory phase is expected to take, so you can plan the return trip from Brantford.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay is checked for fit and colour before being bonded in place. The bite is adjusted and the restoration polished. Mild sensitivity is common for a short time. Contact the office if your bite feels uneven after numbness wears off.
Caring for it
Brush twice daily and clean between teeth, especially around the edges of the restoration. Avoid chewing ice or very hard objects. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard to protect both natural teeth and restorations from excessive forces that could cause chipping.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to inspect the margins for decay or wear. X-rays may be taken periodically. Report sensitivity, a rough edge or a change in bite. With proper care, inlays and onlays can last many years, though they may eventually need replacement.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to discuss a tooth with a large or failing filling. The dentist can assess whether an inlay, onlay or another restoration is most appropriate.
If you have x-rays from another dentist showing the tooth, ask to have them sent ahead to help with planning.

An inlay fits within the chewing surface grooves, while an onlay covers one or more cusps. Both are custom-made and bonded to the tooth. The dentist chooses based on the extent and location of damage.
They are made outside the mouth from durable materials and can strengthen moderately damaged teeth. For large repairs, they are often more durable than direct fillings, though each case differs.
Inlays and onlays preserve more natural tooth structure. A crown may be better if damage is extensive or the tooth is cracked. The dentist will explain which option offers the best protection for your tooth.
Lifespan depends on material, bite forces and care. Many last for years. Regular checkups help monitor their condition and identify wear or decay around the edges early, when it is easier to address.
The tooth is numbed during preparation. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually temporary. If discomfort persists or increases, contact the office so the dentist can check the restoration.
