Too much damage for a filling, not enough for a crown? Boston patients can ask our Port Dover dentist if an inlay or onlay could protect the tooth.

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that fit into or over part of a back tooth. An inlay sits within the grooves between the cusps, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. They are often used when a cavity or old filling is too large for a direct filling to be reliable, but enough healthy tooth remains that a full crown may not be necessary.
If you are from Boston and have a molar or premolar with a large filling, a crack or significant decay, ask about inlays and onlays at our Port Dover office. The dentist can compare these with fillings and crowns so you understand which option preserves the most tooth while still offering lasting strength.

When they fit
Back teeth with large cavities, old fillings that are breaking down or cusps that have cracked or worn are common candidates. Because an inlay or onlay is made to fit precisely, it can reinforce the tooth better than a large direct filling. The dentist will examine the tooth and x-rays to judge whether there is enough sound structure to support one.
A crown covers the entire tooth and usually requires more of it to be reshaped. An onlay can protect weakened cusps while keeping more of the natural tooth intact. However, if the tooth is badly cracked or has very little structure left, a crown may still be the safer recommendation. Ask the dentist to explain the trade-offs for your tooth.
Materials
Ceramic and composite resin inlays and onlays can be shaded to match natural teeth, making them a good choice where appearance matters. Ceramic is known for stain resistance and durability. Composite may be easier to repair. The dentist will explain which material suits the tooth’s position and the forces it handles when you chew or clench.
Gold has a long track record in dentistry and is very durable and gentle on opposing teeth, though it is clearly visible. It is sometimes chosen for back teeth that take heavy biting forces or for people who grind. Talk with the dentist about how appearance, longevity and wear on neighbouring teeth factor into your choice.
Treatment
The tooth is numbed and any decay or old filling material is removed. The dentist shapes the area to receive the restoration, then takes an impression or digital scan. A temporary filling protects the tooth while the inlay or onlay is made. Be gentle on that side and avoid sticky foods until your next visit.
At the second appointment, the temporary is removed and the custom restoration is tried in to check fit, contacts and bite. Once everything is right, it is bonded or cemented in place and polished. The dentist will check your bite carefully and make any small adjustments before you leave, so the tooth feels like part of your natural bite.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common for a short time after placement. If the bite feels high, sensitivity increases or pain develops, contact the office so the restoration can be checked. Small bite adjustments can make a significant difference to comfort and protect the tooth from extra stress. Mild tenderness usually fades within a week or two.
Brush and floss carefully around the edges, where the restoration meets your natural tooth, since decay can still develop there. If you grind or clench, a night guard may help protect the restoration. Regular checkups let the dentist monitor its condition and catch any problems early. Avoid using the restored tooth to crack nuts, chew ice or open packaging.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment of a heavily filled or damaged back tooth. Mention any sensitivity, pain on biting or a filling that feels rough or broken, so the dentist can examine it closely.
If the tooth hurts when you bite, avoid chewing on it until it has been checked, and note when the discomfort occurs.

An inlay sits within the grooves between the cusps of a back tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Both are custom-made and bonded in place. The dentist chooses based on where the damage is and how much tooth remains.
For large cavities, they can provide better strength and fit than a big direct filling. For small cavities, a regular filling is usually enough. The dentist will recommend what suits the size and location of the damage.
If the tooth is badly cracked or very weakened, a crown may offer better protection. Onlays can save more natural tooth when enough healthy structure remains. Ask the dentist to compare both options for your particular tooth.
With good care they can last many years. Longevity depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and how well the edges are kept clean. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor them over time and spot wear early.
Ceramic and composite restorations can be shaded to blend with natural teeth. Gold is clearly visible but very durable. Discuss appearance with the dentist when choosing the material so the result suits your priorities for that tooth.
Composite fillings repair decay with resin shaded to your tooth. Boston residents can learn how the visit works and how to care for fillings after.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by decay, cracks or large fillings. Boston patients can learn why one is suggested and how visits go.
