Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that repair back teeth with moderate to large damage. An inlay fits within the grooves of a tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Made outside the mouth and bonded in place, they can be stronger than a large filling and more conservative than a full crown.
Bloomsburg patients with a broken, heavily filled or decayed tooth can ask about inlays and onlays at our Port Dover office. The dentist examines the tooth, explains which restoration offers the right balance of strength and conservation, and describes how the appointments are typically arranged.

When they fit
An inlay or onlay may be recommended when a cavity or old filling is too large for a direct filling to support well, but enough healthy tooth remains that a full crown would remove more structure than necessary. They are often used on molars and premolars that handle heavy chewing forces and need reinforcement to resist cracking.
If a tooth is severely broken, has had root canal treatment or has very little structure left, a crown may provide more protection. The dentist will explain why one option is preferred over another and what each would involve. Ask about the expected lifespan and maintenance so you can make an informed choice about the tooth.
Materials
Ceramic and composite inlays and onlays can be matched to the colour of your teeth, offering a natural appearance. Ceramic is resistant to staining and wear. Composite may be easier to repair if it chips. The dentist will explain how each material performs under chewing forces and how it suits the location and size of the restoration.
Gold has a long history as a durable restorative material and is gentle on opposing teeth. It is less commonly chosen today because of its appearance, but it may still be suitable in some situations. Ask the dentist about the advantages and drawbacks of each material so you can decide which aligns with your priorities.
The process
At the first visit, the dentist numbs the area, removes decay or old filling material and shapes the tooth. Impressions or a digital scan are taken and sent to a laboratory, where the inlay or onlay is made. A temporary filling protects the tooth in the meantime. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on that side until the final restoration is placed.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the inlay or onlay is checked for fit and appearance. Once everything looks right, it is bonded to the tooth and the bite is adjusted. The dentist will ensure the margins are smooth and that you can bite comfortably. Let them know if anything feels high or uneven before you leave.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure can occur for a short time after bonding. It usually settles within days or weeks. If discomfort increases, lingers or your bite feels off, contact the office so the tooth can be checked. Chew carefully at first and avoid very hard foods until the tooth feels completely comfortable again.
Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth, paying attention to the edges of the restoration where decay can start. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the margins and surrounding tooth. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect the restoration from excessive wear and the risk of fracture over time.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to discuss a damaged or heavily filled tooth. Mention any pain, sensitivity or a previous recommendation for a crown or large filling so the dentist can review your options.
If you have recent X-rays from another office, ask whether they can be sent ahead to help the dentist plan your visit.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
An inlay fits within the grooves of a tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Both are custom-made and bonded in place. The dentist will recommend which suits your tooth depending on how much damage there is.
They are often more durable for larger restorations because they are made outside the mouth and bonded as one piece. The dentist will explain whether this strength is needed for your tooth or whether a direct filling would be adequate.
An inlay or onlay can preserve more healthy tooth structure than a crown when enough of the tooth remains. If the damage is extensive, a crown may still be the better choice. The dentist will explain the trade-offs for your tooth.
With good care, they can last many years. Longevity depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and hygiene. Regular checkups help identify any problems early, when they are simpler and quicker to address for you.
Local anaesthetic is used while the tooth is prepared, so the procedure should be comfortable. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually temporary. Let the office know if discomfort persists or worsens after the first few days.
Composite fillings repair decay or small damage with tooth-coloured material. Bloomsburg patients can learn what the visit involves at our Port Dover dental office.
A crown covers a weakened or heavily filled tooth. Bloomsburg patients can learn when a crown is suggested and how it is made at our Port Dover office.
