An implant-supported denture attaches to dental implants placed in the jaw, rather than resting only on the gums. Depending on the design, it may snap on and off or be fixed in place. Many people find this improves stability, especially for lower dentures, which are more prone to movement. Treatment does involve surgery, healing time and careful planning.
Denture wearers in Windham Centre who struggle with a loose fit can ask our Port Dover dentists whether implant support is an option. The consultation covers bone health, design choices, realistic timelines and the maintenance involved over the long term, so you can weigh the benefits against the commitment.

Why consider it
Conventional dentures can shift while chewing or talking, causing sore spots and limiting what you feel able to eat. Implants act as anchors that reduce this movement. Some people find they can chew a wider range of foods and feel more confident in social situations. Implants may also help preserve bone in the areas where they are placed.
Implant dentures require surgery, more time and greater cost than conventional dentures. Not everyone has enough bone or suitable health for implants. Removable designs still need to be taken out for cleaning each day. The dentist will discuss the advantages and limitations honestly so you can decide whether the benefits match your own priorities and budget.
Design options
Removable implant dentures clip onto attachments fitted to two or more implants. They are taken out daily for cleaning and usually at night. This option often requires fewer implants and may be more affordable than a fixed design. The small attachments wear over time and need periodic replacement to keep the denture clipping in securely.
Fixed designs are attached to several implants and can only be removed by the dentist. They feel more like natural teeth but need more implants, careful cleaning around and beneath the framework, and regular professional maintenance. The dentist will explain which design suits your bone, your health and your expectations, and what each one requires from you day to day.
The process
Imaging helps determine where implants can be placed and whether grafting is needed first. Under local anaesthetic, the implants are placed in the jaw. During healing you may wear a modified version of your existing denture or a temporary one. The dentist will explain how to care for the surgical sites and which foods are sensible while the implants settle.
After the implants have bonded with the bone, attachments are connected and the denture is fitted or modified to clip onto them. The dentist checks the fit, bite and comfort carefully and shows you how to insert, remove and clean the denture. Follow-up visits allow further adjustments as you adapt to the new feel in your mouth.
Long-term care
Remove and clean a removable implant denture every day, brushing both the denture and its attachments. Clean around the implants with a soft brush or water flosser to prevent gum inflammation. For fixed designs, the hygienist will show you how to clean beneath the framework using specialised tools, and may suggest a routine that fits into your evening.
Regular visits allow the dentist to check implant health, replace worn attachments and assess how well the denture fits. X-rays may be taken from time to time to monitor bone levels. Report looseness, sore spots or bleeding around the implants promptly. With good care, implant dentures can provide stable, comfortable function for many years to come.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange a consultation. Windham Centre denture wearers can describe what bothers them most about their current denture so the dentist can plan an assessment that focuses on those concerns.
Bring your current denture and details of your medical history, including medications and conditions such as diabetes or osteoporosis that affect healing.

A removable lower denture may use as few as two implants, while fixed designs need more. The number depends on your bone, which arch is involved and the chosen design. The dentist will recommend an approach after assessing you.
Sometimes an existing denture can be modified to attach to implants, provided it fits well and is in good condition. Otherwise a new denture may be recommended. The dentist will examine your denture and explain which route makes more sense.
Implant placement is done under local anaesthetic. Some swelling and discomfort for a few days afterward are common. Most people manage well with recommended pain relief and soft foods while the area heals over the following week.
Removable implant dentures are usually taken out at night for cleaning and to give the gum tissue a rest. Fixed designs stay in place and are cleaned in the mouth using brushes and other tools your hygienist recommends.
Age alone is not usually a barrier. Overall health, bone quality and your ability to keep up with daily care matter more. The dentist will review your health carefully and discuss whether implants are a suitable choice for you.
