A conventional denture rests on the gums and relies on suction, muscles and sometimes adhesive to stay in place. Lower dentures in particular can feel loose. An implant-supported denture uses a small number of dental implants placed in the jaw to anchor the denture, which can make eating and speaking feel more secure for many people.
Walsingham residents who struggle with a loose denture can ask about implant support at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health, bone and current denture and explain whether implants are a realistic option, how many may be needed and what the process involves from start to finish.

Who it suits
People often consider implant-supported dentures because their current denture slips when eating, causes sore spots or makes them self-conscious when speaking or laughing. Some want to eat a wider range of foods. Others have lost so much bone that conventional dentures are difficult to keep in place.
Implants need enough healthy bone and good general health for healing. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and certain medications can affect success. Bone grafting may be needed in some cases. The dentist will assess these factors, often with X-rays or 3D imaging, before recommending implant support.
Design options
A removable implant-supported denture clips onto attachments on two or more implants. It is more stable than a conventional denture but can still be taken out for cleaning. This option is often considered for the lower jaw. Attachments wear over time and may need periodic replacement.
A fixed implant-supported bridge is secured to several implants and is removed only by the dentist. It can feel closer to natural teeth but usually requires more implants, more bone and a higher investment. The dentist will explain the benefits, limits and maintenance of each design for your situation.
Treatment
Implants are placed in the jaw under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation. During healing, your existing denture may be adjusted so you can keep wearing it. Healing time varies, but implants usually need several months to integrate with the bone before they can fully support the denture.
Once healing is confirmed, attachments are connected to the implants and the denture is fitted to them. This may involve modifying your existing denture or making a new one. The dentist checks the fit, bite and comfort, then shows you how to insert, remove and clean the denture.
Living with it
Remove a snap-on denture daily to clean both the denture and the implant attachments in your mouth. Use a soft brush and any special tools recommended by the hygienist. Plaque around implants can cause gum and bone inflammation. Fixed bridges need cleaning underneath with floss threaders or water flossers.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to inspect implants, gums and attachments. Clips or inserts in removable dentures wear and lose grip over time, and replacing them can restore retention. Report any looseness, soreness or bleeding around implants so problems can be addressed before they become serious.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham residents can call our Port Dover office to book a consultation. Mention how long you have worn dentures and what problems you are having, so the dentist can plan an appropriate assessment.
Bring your current denture, a list of medications and any previous dental X-rays. Prepare questions about costs, healing time and maintenance.
Before you book

Removable dentures often use two or more implants, while fixed bridges typically need more. The number depends on your jaw, bone and the design chosen. The dentist will recommend an approach after assessment.
Sometimes an existing denture in good condition can be modified to attach to implants. In other cases, a new denture works better. The dentist will check your denture and explain the options.
Implant-supported dentures are usually more stable than conventional ones and can improve chewing. They still feel different from natural teeth, and adapting takes some time.
Local anaesthetic is used during placement. Some swelling and soreness afterwards are common and usually manageable. The dentist will give you aftercare instructions.
Yes. Clips and inserts in removable implant dentures wear with daily use and may need replacing periodically to maintain a secure fit. This is part of routine maintenance.
