More stability for dentures

Anchoring a denture can change how it feels to eat and speak.

An implant-supported denture attaches to dental implants placed in the jaw, rather than relying only on suction and the gums. It may clip on and off for cleaning or be fixed in place. Many people choose this option because a conventional denture, particularly on the lower jaw, moves too much for comfortable chewing or speaking.

Our Port Dover office welcomes Townsend residents who want to explore whether implants could stabilize their denture. The dentist will assess bone, gums and general health, discuss your frustrations with your current denture and explain how many implants might be needed and how treatment would be staged.

Is it right for you?

Suitability depends on your jaw, health and goals.

Who may benefit

People who struggle with a loose denture, sore spots caused by movement, trouble eating firmer foods or a growing reliance on adhesive may benefit from implant support. It can also be worth considering for someone about to lose their remaining teeth who would like a steadier replacement from the start, rather than adapting to a conventional denture first and changing later.

Health and bone considerations

Enough bone is needed to hold the implants, and the gums should be healthy before surgery. X-rays or 3D imaging help the dentist judge whether that is the case. Smoking, poorly controlled diabetes, some medications and heavy grinding can all affect success, so they need to be discussed openly and factored into the plan from the outset.

Types of attachment

There is more than one way to attach a denture.

Removable snap-on dentures

Removable implant-supported dentures clip onto attachments on two or more implants. They come out every day for cleaning and generally need fewer implants than fixed designs. Most people find them far steadier than a conventional denture while still being simple to look after. The small nylon inserts or clips wear with use and are replaced from time to time.

Fixed implant bridges

Fixed options are secured to the implants and can only be removed by the dentist. They feel closer to natural teeth, but usually need more implants and more careful cleaning around the base, where food can collect. The dentist will explain the differences in comfort, maintenance and planning so you can decide which arrangement suits your daily life.

Treatment stages

Treatment usually unfolds over several months.

  1. Implant placement and healing

After planning, the implants are placed in the jaw, usually under local anaesthetic and sometimes with sedation for comfort. A healing period follows while the implants bond with the bone. During this time you may wear a softened version of your existing denture or a temporary one. Following the aftercare instructions closely helps healing go smoothly.

  2. Connecting the denture

Once the implants are stable, attachments are connected and the denture is either fitted new or modified to clip onto them. The dentist will check the fit, bite and comfort, and show you how to put a removable denture in and take it out. A few adjustments in the first weeks are normal as your mouth gets used to the new support.

Daily care

Both the denture and the implants need daily attention.

  • Cleaning the denture and implants

Take a snap-on denture out every day and clean it with a soft brush and a cleaner recommended by the team. Brush gently around each implant attachment as well, since plaque left there can inflame the gum. Fixed designs need special floss or a water flosser to reach underneath, and the hygienist can demonstrate the technique until it feels routine.

  • Regular reviews and part replacement

Regular checkups allow the dentist to look at the implants, the gum around them, the attachments and the denture itself. Clips and inserts lose their grip over time and can be swapped to restore a secure fit. Contact the office if the denture loosens, a part breaks or the gum around an implant becomes sore or starts to bleed.

Planning your appointment

Exploring implant dentures from Townsend.

Call our Port Dover office and explain what is difficult about your current denture. The team can book a consultation to discuss whether implant support might help and what assessment would be needed.

Bring your current denture, a list of medications and any previous X-rays or scans you may have, so the dentist can review them together.

Questions about implant-supported dentures

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How many implants does a denture need?

It varies. A removable lower denture may need as few as two implants, while fixed options generally need more. The number depends on your bone, which jaw is involved and the style of denture. The dentist will recommend an approach after assessment.

Can my existing denture be used with implants?

Sometimes an existing denture in good condition can be modified to clip onto implants. In other cases a new denture gives a better result. The dentist will examine your current denture and explain which option is more suitable and why.

Is an implant-supported denture removable?

Some are removable and clip onto implants, while others are fixed in place and only removed by the dentist. Removable versions come out daily for cleaning. The dentist will explain the differences so you can choose what fits your preferences and routine.

Will I be able to eat more foods?

Many people find chewing easier and more comfortable with implant support, because the denture moves much less. Very hard or sticky foods may still be a challenge. The dentist can explain what is realistic to expect for your particular situation.

Do implant dentures need special maintenance?

Yes. Daily cleaning around the implants is important, and clips or inserts need replacing from time to time to keep the fit secure. Regular checkups help keep the implants, gums and denture working well together over the years.
