An implant-supported denture is a full or partial denture that attaches to dental implants placed in the jaw. Compared with a conventional denture held by suction and fit alone, it is typically more stable, which can make chewing and speaking feel more secure. Designs range from removable dentures that snap onto implants to fixed versions that only a dentist can remove.
If you are in Pine Grove and frustrated with a loose denture, our Port Dover office can assess whether implant support is an option. The dentist will review your bone, health and goals before recommending a plan.

Is it right for you
People who struggle with a loose lower denture, find eating difficult or dislike using adhesive often consider implant support. It can also help those losing remaining teeth who want a stable replacement. Even a small number of implants can make a noticeable difference in how securely a denture stays in place.
Adequate bone, healthy gums and good general health support success. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and some medications may affect healing. Treatment involves surgery and several months of healing, along with higher cost than conventional dentures. The dentist will explain these considerations honestly so you can weigh them.
Design options
Removable implant overdentures clip onto attachments on two or more implants. They stay firmly in place during use but can be taken out for cleaning and overnight. This design often requires fewer implants and is easier to maintain at home. It is a common choice for the lower jaw.
Fixed designs are secured to several implants and are not removed at home. They can feel closer to natural teeth but need more implants, more involved planning and careful cleaning underneath. The dentist will compare stability, cleaning needs, cost and long-term maintenance for each option.
Treatment process
After planning with X-rays and possibly 3D imaging, implants are placed under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation. Your existing denture may be adjusted to wear during healing. The bone gradually integrates with the implants over several months. Part of the treatment may be referred depending on complexity.
Once healing is confirmed, attachments are added and the denture is either modified or a new one is made to connect to the implants. The dentist checks fit, bite and comfort. You will be shown how to insert, remove and clean a removable design. Follow-up visits allow for fine-tuning.
Long-term care
Clean the denture daily and brush around each implant and attachment to prevent inflammation. Removable dentures should be taken out for cleaning. Fixed designs need special brushes or water flossers to clean underneath. Ask the hygienist to demonstrate techniques until you feel confident doing it at home.
Attachments and clips wear over time and may need replacing to maintain a secure fit. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor gum health, bone levels and denture wear. Report looseness, sore spots or bleeding around implants promptly so problems can be addressed early.

It varies. Some removable lower overdentures use two implants, while fixed designs often need more. The number depends on your bone, jaw and chosen design. The dentist will recommend a plan after assessing your imaging.
Sometimes an existing denture can be modified to connect to implants, if it fits well and is in good condition. Otherwise, a new denture may be recommended. The dentist will assess this during planning.
Many people find them much more stable than conventional dentures, which can make eating and speaking more comfortable. They still feel different from natural teeth, especially removable designs, and there is an adjustment period.
Removable designs are taken out and brushed daily, along with the implants and attachments. Fixed designs need special tools to clean underneath. The hygienist can show you the best techniques and products to use.
Bone grafting may be possible in some cases, or a different implant position or design may be considered. The dentist will explain the options, which might include referral to a specialist for further assessment.
