A conventional denture rests on the gums and relies on suction and muscle control to stay in place. An implant-supported denture attaches to two or more implants in the jaw, which can reduce movement and improve chewing. Some designs snap on and off for cleaning, while others are fixed and removed only by the dentist.
If you are a Normandale resident who struggles with a loose denture or is planning a full-arch replacement, our Port Dover team can discuss whether implant support is an option. We will review your health, bone and goals before recommending a design.

Why consider it
Many people with lower dentures find them difficult to keep in place. Implants can provide anchorage that reduces slipping, makes chewing firmer foods easier and boosts confidence when speaking. Some implant designs also allow the palate to be uncovered on upper dentures, which some wearers prefer.
Implant-supported dentures involve surgery, healing time and higher costs than conventional dentures. They also need ongoing maintenance, including replacing attachments over time. The dentist will explain whether the benefits are likely to outweigh these considerations in your situation.
Design options
Removable implant dentures attach with clips, locators or bars and can be taken out for cleaning. They are often supported by two to four implants. Wearers usually find them more stable than conventional dentures, though the attachments wear and need periodic replacement.
Fixed designs are secured to several implants and are not removed by the patient. They feel more like natural teeth but require more implants, careful hygiene and professional maintenance. The dentist will explain which option suits your bone, budget and preferences.
The process
The dentist evaluates your health, gums and bone with x-rays or three-dimensional imaging. If bone is insufficient, grafting may be discussed. Implants are placed, sometimes by a specialist, and given time to integrate. Your existing denture may be modified for use during healing.
Once implants are stable, attachments are connected and the denture is either modified or newly made to fit them. The dentist checks fit and bite, then teaches you how to insert, remove and clean the denture. Follow-up visits help fine-tune comfort and function.
Care and upkeep
Clean the denture and attachments daily as instructed, and brush around the implants with a soft brush or specialized tools. Plaque around implants can cause inflammation and bone loss. Remove removable dentures at night unless told otherwise and store them properly.
Attachments wear and may need replacing to maintain retention. Regular checkups allow the dentist to inspect implants, gums and the denture, and take x-rays when needed. Report soreness, looseness or bleeding promptly so problems can be addressed early.

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It depends on the jaw, the design and bone availability. Removable lower dentures often use two or more implants, while fixed designs need more. The dentist will recommend a number for your case.
Sometimes an existing denture can be adapted to connect to implants. In other cases, a new denture is recommended. The dentist will assess your denture’s condition.
Removable designs are usually taken out at night for cleaning. Fixed designs stay in place. Follow the specific instructions given for your denture.
Attachments wear over time and may need replacing periodically. The dentist checks them at maintenance visits and replaces them when retention decreases.
The area is numbed during surgery, and discomfort afterward is usually manageable. Some swelling and tenderness are common in the first few days.
