Implant-supported dentures attach to a small number of implants placed in the jaw, using snaps, bars or other connectors. Compared with a conventional denture resting only on the gums, they can feel more stable while eating and speaking. Some designs remain removable for cleaning, while others are fixed in place. Suitability depends on bone, health and personal goals.
Long Point patients frustrated with a loose denture can request a consultation at our Port Dover office. Treatment involves several stages over months, so share your seasonal plans when you start.

Why consider it
Lower dentures in particular can float or shift because of the tongue and limited ridge. People may avoid certain foods or rely heavily on adhesive. Anchoring to implants can improve retention and confidence. Some people also find speaking easier with a more secure denture.
Implant dentures still need care, adjustments and occasional replacement of attachments. They involve surgery and healing time. Chewing improves for many people but is not identical to natural teeth. The dentist will help you weigh benefits against cost, time and maintenance.
Assessment
X-rays or 3D imaging show bone volume and the position of nerves and sinuses. Your medical history, medications and smoking status are reviewed, since they affect healing. If bone is limited, grafting or a different plan may be discussed, or referral to a specialist may be suggested.
Removable designs snap onto implants or a bar and come out for cleaning. Fixed designs stay in and are removed only by the dentist. The number of implants, your bite and your dexterity help determine which option suits you.
Treatment stages
Implants are placed under local freezing, sometimes with sedation if appropriate. During healing, your existing denture may be adjusted so you can continue wearing it. Healing time varies; the dentist will explain when the implants are ready to support the denture.
Once healed, attachments are connected and either your existing denture is modified or a new one is made. The fit and bite are checked carefully. Follow-up visits allow adjustments as you get used to the new level of stability.
Living with it
Clean the denture daily and brush around the implants or bar to keep gums healthy. Interdental brushes or water flossers may help. Remove removable dentures at night where advised. Inflammation around implants can threaten their stability if not managed.
Attachments wear over time and may need replacement. Relines or adjustments may be needed as gums change. Keep regular checkups for the implants and the denture. Report looseness, sore spots or changes in how the denture clicks into place.
Planning your appointment
Request a consultation at our Port Dover office and bring your current denture. Ask about the stages, healing times and how appointments could be scheduled around your seasonal stays.
Bring a medication list and any recent X-rays, and note what frustrates you most about your current denture.
Before you book

It varies with the jaw, bone and denture design. Lower dentures are often supported by a small number of implants, while fixed designs may need more. The dentist will recommend a number after assessment.
Sometimes an existing denture can be modified to attach to implants if it is in good condition and fits well. Otherwise, a new denture may be recommended. The dentist will evaluate yours.
Freezing keeps you comfortable during placement. Some swelling and soreness afterward is common for a few days and usually manageable with recommended pain relief and rest.
Remove a removable denture and brush it daily, then clean around the implants or bar. Fixed designs require special brushes or flossers. The hygienist can demonstrate the routine.
Yes. Clips or inserts often wear over time and can be replaced to restore retention. Regular checkups help identify when servicing is needed before the denture becomes noticeably loose.
