Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsA steadier denture
Conventional dentures rest on the gums and rely on suction, fit and sometimes adhesive. For some people, especially with lower dentures, that stability is never quite enough. Implant-supported dentures attach to two or more implants placed in the jaw, reducing movement and often improving confidence when chewing and talking.
Many longtime denture wearers in Jarvis ask whether implants could help. A consultation at our Port Dover office looks at your bone, health and goals to see whether this approach is a realistic option.

Is it for you
People who struggle with a moving denture, sore spots, difficulty chewing certain foods or worry about the denture shifting while speaking often explore this option. It may also suit those about to lose their remaining teeth who want to plan for a more stable replacement from the start.
Enough bone is needed to hold implants, so X-rays or scans are used to assess it. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and some medications can affect healing. Your overall health will be reviewed. The dentist will explain candidly whether implants are advisable and what preparatory steps may be needed.
Design options
A removable implant-supported denture snaps onto attachments on the implants. It is much more stable than a conventional denture but can still be taken out for cleaning. Two implants are often used for a lower denture, though the number varies. Attachments need periodic replacement as they wear.
A fixed implant denture is secured to several implants and can only be removed by the dentist. It feels more like natural teeth but involves more implants, higher cost and specific cleaning techniques. The dentist will compare the options and explain which suits your bone, budget and preferences.
Treatment steps
Implants are placed in the jaw under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation. Extractions may be done first or at the same time. During healing, you may wear a modified existing denture or a temporary. Follow instructions about diet and cleaning to protect the implants while they integrate.
Once the implants have bonded with the bone, attachments are fitted and the denture is either modified or newly made to connect to them. The fit and bite are checked carefully. You will learn how to insert, remove and clean a removable denture, or how to clean around a fixed one.
Living with it
Clean the denture daily and brush around each implant attachment carefully. Interdental brushes or water flossers may help with fixed designs. Inflammation around implants can threaten their stability, so good hygiene is essential. The hygienist can recommend tools and show you techniques.
Attend regular checkups so the implants, gums, attachments and denture can be examined. Attachments may need replacement over time. Contact the office if the denture loosens, an implant feels uncomfortable or gums become swollen. Early attention keeps small issues from becoming larger ones.

Sometimes an existing denture can be modified to attach to implants, depending on its condition and fit. In other cases, a new denture is recommended. The dentist will advise.
It depends on the arch, bone and type of denture. A lower removable denture often uses two implants, while fixed designs need more. The dentist will recommend a number for your case.
Implant dentures are usually much more stable than conventional ones, and fixed designs can feel quite natural. Adapting still takes some time.
Removable implant dentures are usually taken out for cleaning and often overnight. Fixed designs stay in and are cleaned in place. Follow the instructions you receive.
Daily cleaning, regular checkups and periodic replacement of attachments for removable designs. The dentist will explain the maintenance schedule for your denture.
