Anchored for steadier chewing

Implants can give a denture something firm to hold onto.

Conventional dentures rest on the gums and rely on suction, muscle control and sometimes adhesive. For many people, particularly with lower dentures, that can mean slipping, sore spots and difficulty with certain foods. An implant-supported denture attaches to a small number of implants placed in the jaw, which can make it noticeably more stable during eating and speaking.

If you live in Hagersville and are frustrated with a loose denture, you can explore implant support at our Port Dover office. Treatment unfolds over several months, so we outline the sequence and the likely visits before you commit to anything.

Who it may suit

Implant support can help when dentures don’t stay put.

Common reasons people consider it

People often explore implant-supported dentures when a lower denture moves while talking or eating, when adhesive no longer helps, or when they want to chew a wider range of foods with confidence. Some people already have dentures, while others are about to lose remaining teeth and want to plan a more stable replacement from the start.

What needs to be checked

The jawbone needs enough volume to hold implants, which the dentist assesses with X-rays and sometimes additional imaging. General health, medications, smoking and the ability to clean around the implants all affect suitability. Some patients may need bone grafting or referral to a specialist for implant placement, depending on their anatomy and history.

Types of attachment

Implant dentures come in removable and fixed styles.

Removable snap-on dentures

A removable implant-retained denture clips onto attachments on two or more implants. It stays steadier than a conventional denture but can be taken out for cleaning and at night. This design is common for the lower jaw and may be possible using a person’s existing denture, modified to fit attachments, depending on its condition.

Fixed implant bridges

A fixed implant bridge, sometimes called an implant-supported full arch, is attached to several implants and is removed only by the dentist. It can feel more like natural teeth but usually requires more implants, more extensive planning and higher cost. The dentist will explain which designs are realistic for your bone, budget and goals.

The treatment path

Treatment happens in stages over several months.

  1. Placing the implants

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation. You may wear your existing denture, adjusted and softened inside, during healing. Over the following months, bone grows around the implants. If you are travelling back to Hagersville after placement, arrange a driver if sedation is used, and plan for a few days of soft foods.

  2. Connecting the denture

Once the implants are stable, attachments are connected and the denture is fitted or modified to clip on. The dentist checks the bite, fit and how easily you can remove and insert it. Follow-up visits allow adjustments. Learning to handle the attachments takes a little practice, and the team will guide you through it.

Living with it

Implant dentures need regular care to stay secure.

  • Daily cleaning routine

Remove a snap-on denture daily to clean it, and brush around each implant and attachment carefully with a soft brush. Interdental brushes or a water flosser can help reach around implants. Clean the gums and tongue as well. Good hygiene keeps the tissues around the implants healthy and helps prevent inflammation that could threaten them.

  • Wear and periodic servicing

The small nylon inserts or clips that hold a removable denture wear over time and need periodic replacement. Relines may also be needed as the gums change. Regular checkups let the dentist examine the implants, review X-rays and service the attachments. Contact the office if the denture starts to feel loose or any implant area becomes sore.

Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment and explain what bothers you about your current denture. The team will plan time to review your bone, health and possible designs.

Bring your existing denture, a full medication list and any previous X-rays, since they help the dentist judge whether implant support is realistic.

Implant denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How many implants are needed?

A lower snap-on denture is often supported by two or more implants, while upper dentures and fixed designs usually need more. The number depends on bone, design and your goals. The dentist will explain what is recommended for your mouth.

Can my current denture be used?

Sometimes. If your existing denture fits well and is in good condition, it may be modified to attach to implants. Older or poorly fitting dentures are often replaced. The dentist will assess yours and explain the options.

Will I need to remove the denture at night?

Removable implant dentures are generally taken out nightly for cleaning and to rest the gums. Fixed designs stay in place and are cleaned in the mouth. The dentist will give specific instructions for your type of denture.

Are implant dentures painful to get?

Implant placement is done with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Mild soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards are common and usually manageable with recommended pain relief.

Will I be able to eat normally?

Many people find they can chew a wider range of foods more comfortably than with a conventional denture. Very hard or sticky foods may still need care. Results depend on the design, bone support and how you adapt over time.
