More stability for dentures

Implants can give a denture something firm to hold onto.

Traditional dentures rest on the gums and rely on suction, muscle control and sometimes adhesive to stay in place. For many people, especially with lower dentures, that can mean slipping, sore spots and difficulty chewing firmer foods. Implant-supported dentures attach to implants placed in the jawbone, which can make the denture feel far more secure during eating and speaking.

People in Boston who are frustrated with a loose denture, or who are about to lose their remaining teeth, can talk to our Port Dover office about implant support. The dentist will review your health, bone and goals to explain whether this approach is worth considering for you.

Who it may help

Stability is the main reason people explore this option.

Common reasons to consider it

People who struggle with a loose lower denture, find it hard to chew firmer foods or feel self-conscious about their denture moving when they talk often ask about implant support. It may also be considered when remaining teeth need to be removed and a long-term replacement plan is being designed from the start, rather than added later on.

Health and bone considerations

Implants need enough healthy bone and good general health for healing. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and some medications can affect success. Imaging helps the dentist assess how much bone is available. If bone is limited, grafting or alternative approaches may be discussed. Your full health history is an important part of the decision, so share it openly.

Design options

There is more than one way to attach a denture to implants.

Snap-on removable dentures

Removable implant dentures snap onto attachments fixed to two or more implants. They can be taken out for cleaning but stay in place much better than traditional dentures while worn. This design is often used for the lower jaw, where loose dentures are most troublesome. The small attachments wear with use over time and may need periodic replacement.

Fixed implant dentures

Fixed implant dentures are secured to several implants and are not removed by the patient. They feel more like natural teeth but usually require more implants and more involved cleaning techniques underneath. The dentist will explain which design suits your bone, health and preferences, and the daily and professional maintenance each one needs over the years.

The process

Treatment happens in stages over several months.

  1. Placing the implants

Implants are placed in the jawbone during a surgical procedure, with numbing and sometimes sedation for comfort. Some cases are referred to a specialist for this stage. A healing period follows while the implants bond with the bone. Your existing denture may be adjusted or relined so you can keep wearing it comfortably during this time.

  2. Attaching the denture

Once the implants have healed, attachments are connected and the denture is fitted or modified to clip or screw onto them. The dentist checks the fit and bite carefully and shows you how to insert, remove and clean the denture. Several follow-up visits may be needed to fine-tune comfort as you get used to the new stability.

Living with it

Implants and attachments both need regular attention.

  • Daily cleaning

Clean the denture daily and brush carefully around the implant attachments in your mouth. Interdental brushes or a water flosser may help reach awkward spots. Plaque around implants can cause gum inflammation and bone loss, so thorough daily cleaning is just as important as it was with natural teeth. The team will show you exactly how to do it.

  • Professional maintenance

Regular checkups allow the team to examine the implants, gums and attachments and look at bone levels on x-rays from time to time. Clips or inserts in removable dentures wear out and may need replacing. If the denture becomes loose, the gum around an implant bleeds or you notice discomfort, contact the office rather than waiting for your next visit.

Implant denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How many implants are needed for a denture?

It depends on the design and your bone. Removable lower dentures may use as few as two implants, while fixed options typically need more. The dentist will recommend a number based on your situation, your bone and the type of denture you prefer.

Can my existing denture be used with implants?

Sometimes an existing denture can be modified to attach to implants, provided it fits well and is in good condition. Otherwise, a new denture may be recommended. The dentist will examine your current denture and explain which approach makes more sense.

Will implant dentures feel like natural teeth?

They are usually much more stable than traditional dentures, and many people find chewing and speaking easier. They still feel different from natural teeth, and a period of adjustment is normal. Follow-up visits help fine-tune comfort during that time.

How do I clean an implant denture?

Removable versions are taken out and cleaned daily, and the implant attachments in your mouth are brushed carefully. Fixed versions need special tools to clean underneath. The team will demonstrate the right technique and suggest tools that suit your hands.

Do the attachments wear out?

Yes. Clips or inserts in removable implant dentures wear with normal use and may need periodic replacement to keep the denture snug. Regular checkups help identify when this is needed, and the change is usually quick and straightforward.
